We went back in time to pick the best Uefa/Europa League finals featuring English teams. And yes before you say it we didn’t include Chelsea vs Benefica. However there are some unlikely candidates for best English finalists/winners. Obviously the Liverpool game goes down as the best final ever. Tottenham Hotspur vs Wolverhampton wasn’t bad considering it was over two legs in 1972. Take a look for yourselves.
Liverpool vs Deportivo Alavés | 5–4* – 2000-01
Liverpool beat Barcelona in the semi to play Alaves in the final. What a final it was. Probably goes down as the best Uefa Cup final ever. Only way Liverpool like to win titles in Europe. Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler and Gary McAllister all on the scoresheet. Take a look for yourself!
Atletico Madrid vs Fulham | 2-1 – 2009-10
Fulham had their best ever season and put on a brilliant display against Atletico. Only the magic of Diego Forlan separated the two teams. If Martin Kelly and Damien Duff had taken their chances then who knows how Fulham’s fortunes would’ve turned out.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Wolverhampton Wanderers | Agg(3-2) 1971–72
Played over two legs in the 70s, this is our oldest inclusion. End-to-end chances by both teams made this a classic in our eyes. Love the kits, the goals and long balls. Martin Chivers with two banging goals any striker would be proud of. He single-handedly changed the game in Tottenham’s favour. At the time they were the first British team to win two European cups.
Galatasaray vs Arsenal | 0–0* – 1999-2000
How this game stayed 0-0 is beyond us. Two classic teams attacking one another for the entire game. Between them Henry, Bergkamp and Sukur couldn’t bag a goal. Galatasary hit the wood-work as Martin Keown skied an open goal. Only penalties could separate the two after full time. Misses from Patrick Vieira and Davor Suker handed the cup to Galatasaray, who won 4-1 on penalties in the end.
