In a recent post we wrote about some of the teams that are facing possible relegation this season. To follow that, My Betting Sites have created an infographic which visually represents the financial cost of being relegated.
A bidding war between Sky and BT for the rights to show Premiership football in the UK has meant that TV income has over doubled in the past five years. That money is distributed among the clubs, and 2016/2017 is the first year when every club is guaranteed at least £100m.
In contrast, a Championship club can expect around £5m a season from broadcasting rights. That creates an incredible gap between the two leagues, which has the potential to make relegation more damaging than ever before.
Over the past ten years, 23 teams have been relegated from the Premiership, and of those, only five are now playing in the league (West Ham, Watford, Burnley, Middlesbrough and Hull). Of the teams relegated last season, Newcastle are fighting for automatic promotion, while Norwich will aim to compete in the playoffs.
With some of the statistics featured below, it’s no surprise both teams will be eager to secure a return to the Premier League as soon as possible.
