How To Bet On Football

More than 40% of money spent in UK sport betting is on football, making it the most popular way for bettors to make a few quid. The beautiful game has a massive amount of matches being played at any time of the day or night, so there’s almost always some sort of market open, particularly if you’re using a betting site like NetBet, who offer some of the best odds around and a number of special deals. Bookies will offer odds on not just the overall outcome of the match, but various things that may happen during, such as amount of goals scored, scorers, cards red or yellow to be shown, all the way down to the amount of corners that will be won.

Here are a few of the markets that we offer, and how you can maximise your profits from each one of them. NetBet wants to remind our users to gamble responsibly.

Match Bet

This one is pretty simple. Who do you think will win, or do you think there’ll be a draw? It’s the easiest bet you can make. One thing to note is that match bets are for the 90 minutes of a game, so if you’re betting on a cup match and your team wins in Extra-Time or on Penalties, you will not be paid out as the match you bet on was a draw. You can bet on results after extra-time, or teams to win on penalties as well, but be careful that you remember a standard match bet is just for the initial 90 minutes.

Half-time/full-time

You can bet on the result of either the first half or the second half. You can also go for a comeback win where one team wins the first half but the other ultimately gets a draw or a come-from-behind win. You’ve got to have a solid knowledge of the sport to make anything with this particular bet, knowing which teams start well or take a while to get going, and what the likelihood of a team conceding early/late is.

The ‘Asian handicap’ bet

One question we get asked the most is ‘what is an Asian handicap bet?’ This market is when you eliminate the possibility of a draw in betting terms while the team you’re betting on has to overcome a handicap. Here at NetBet, we have as much as quarter-goal handicaps, meaning that if you bet on, for example, Manchester United to beat Chelsea with a -1.25 handicap, you’re backing United to win by at least two goals.

The ‘European handicap’ bet

This one is pretty much the same as the Asian Handicap, but it has two differences that make it a separate market. With a European handicap, the draw is still an option, and you are only dealing in whole numbers. For example, Manchester United to beat Chelsea with a -1 handicap, you’re backing United to win by at least two goals.

Goalscorer betting

Another highly popular bet for more casual punters is to bet on a particular player to score during a match. There are a number of ways to take this particular bet – you can pick a player to be the first or last goalscorer in the match, or even to just get on the scoresheet at all. Make sure you’ve taken a look at the sport pages before making a bet on this, as a player’s form will play a big part in the odds and you could make a good amount if you have some knowledge. We’ve got some of the best bets around over on the NetBet Sport Football page.

Correct score

This one is also pretty common, because when you get it right you stand to make quite a bit off of a small bet. In this market, you are predicting the final score of a match within the 90 minutes. Be very careful when it comes to European or Cup games, because the correct score only counts within the 90 minutes.

Scorecast/Wincast

The ‘Scorecast’ is when you are confident that you know what the final score of the game will be, and the who will score. The odds will be astronomically high for many of these bets

SImilar to that, a ‘Wincast’ is when you pick a goalscorer and the outcome of the match, without the exact correct score. The odds will be astronomical for these bets, of course more for the scorecast than the wincast because there are many more potential scorelines than outcomes

In-play betting

If you miss the kick-off, that doesn’t mean you’re not able to go over to the NetBet Sport Football page and bet on the big game this weekend. You can bet on what the score is going to be towards the end of the game, who will score next, and a variety of other markets. You can even bet on who will win relative to the point of the game you are in at that time, for example, if Liverpool are 6-0 up against Crystal Palace, you can bet that from that point on Palace will win, meaning a 6-1 final score would net you a profit.

Accumulators

There’s nothing more fun than comparing accas with your mates, and when one comes in, it’s party time. With an accumulator, you are combining multiple selections into one bet and as such building a bet that could offer massive odds and huge returns on a relatively small stake. There are many stories of fans winning £10,000+ from a miniscule bet, but that is because of how highly unlikely it is that you will predict all of these results accurately.
