European Football Preview
The league seasons of the top teams in Europe began last weekend with La Liga and the Bundesliga both kicking off on Friday or Saturday, while Ligue 1 continued in earnest over the weekend. We will be treated to the Serie A kick-off as well, with a number of tasty clashes on opening day.
In La Liga, Barcelona were stunned by a late comeback from Real Sociedad that almost cost them three points on opening day. And they face their old cup final opponents Athletic Club in one of the most exciting matches of the weekend. Real Madrid will travel to eternal banana-pel club Levante on Sunday night, while league champions Atletico host Elche at the Vicente Calderon.
Over in Ligue 1, PSG fans will have to wait another week to watch Lionel Messi’s first game away from Barcelona, but he will likely travel with the squad to Brest. Lyon will be looking for a solid victory at home to Clermont after a disastrous start to the season, and Lille’s trip to St-Etienne will also have that same pressure hanging over it.
In Germany, it’s all-go on Saturday from 2.30PM when Eintracht Frankfurt host Augsburg and Freiburg face Borussia Dortmund. Also on the bill is Hertha Berlin vs Wolfsburg, Bochum vs Mainz, Furth vs Bielefeld and Leverkusen vs Monchengladbach. Champions Bayern Munich are back in action on Sunday evening against Koln in the second game of the evening, after Hoffenheim play host to Union Berlin
Football is finally back in Italy this weekend, and you can expect fireworks on the opening weekend, particularly when AC Milan face Sampdoria and champions Inter Milan host Genoa.

Perhaps we are getting a bit bold with this one, but we reckon that a draw is a definite possibility here. AC Milan to draw with Sampdoria – 47/20
