Hungary v England Preview
It’s unbeaten vs unbeaten as England return to World Cup qualifying after Euro 2021. The most fascinating part of this game is going to be the state of mind of the England players after a weird summer. The nation fell in love with Harry Kane and co as they came within a couple of penalties of finally bringing ‘it’ home. But that final left a bitter taste in the mouth, and despite a tournament where they conceded two goals, fans aren’t too keen on boss Southgate. They would have liked a slightly easier test than one of the Euros’ surprise packages in Hungary, especially away from home without any travelling fans permitted. Striker Daniel Salloi and defender Mark Tamas will join an almost unchanged squad from their impressive Euros run for the hosts, while England may offer up a first cap to Patrick Bamford after Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled out during the week. It’s a legitimate test for Southgate, who will likely need to win the World Cup next year to keep his job.
Hungary v England odds
England are strong 10/23 favourites to win, while the host team Hungary are 27/4 underdogs and a draw is priced at 16\5.

England to win & both teams to score – 3/1
The one thing you could say for Southgate’s style is that it unequivocally results in much less goals going in against England. That being said, this is a tougher test than many people want to admit, and we reckon this could end up being a tight little game, which we’d imagine the visitors will edge at 2-1 or 3-1. You can get 31/4 and 12/1 on both of those scorelines, but at 3/1 there is real value to be found in what’s only a slightly risky bet. We reckon there are a couple of England goals, for sure, coming in Budapest, but don’t be surprised to see the hosts test Jordan Pickford a little bit this time around.
Raheem Sterling to score anytime – 33/20
Raheem Sterling emerged as the star of England’s unforgettable Euro 2020, and we reckon he gets back on the scoresheet here. That 4/5 on Harry Kane to score anytime just doesn’t seem appealing to us, especially given his struggles off the pitch at club level so far. Look, maybe he will hit the net, but we just don’t fancy it at the price. Patrick Bamford getting a debut goal at anytime looks nice at 11/10 as well, but we aren’t enamoured with the market in this one to be honest.
