The league seasons of the top teams in Europe are all now well underway, and there will be some scintillating action across France, Italy, Spain and Germany taking place this weekend.
In La Liga, the brilliant surprise package run from Real Sociedad continues, and they stay top of the table despite Real Madrid’s game in hand due to a recent bye week. They’ll have to beat Athletic Bilbao at home to keep that position on Sunday night, and hope that Real Madrid’s hangover from that memorable Clasico win last weekend continues with a slow performance in the early kick-off against Elche the afternoon before. Villareal travel to Valencia in another one of the exciting clashes of a weekend where Barcelona host Alaves and Atletico Madrid host Real Betis. The action continues from Saturday afternoon to Monday night under the lights.
Over in Ligue 1, we kick off with a game that would have been a cracker this time six months ago in PSG hosting Lille. Now, it’s kind of a dud, with the champions’ disastrous start to the season already placing them 13 points and nine points below the mega-money capital side, who are already building a sizable lead at the top of the table over second-place Lens. They will feature in the plum clash on Saturday night when they face Lyon away from home, while other exciting games include Angers v Nice and Strasbourg v Lorient.
In Germany, we’ve got a few really fascinating games taking place, perhaps the pick of them being Leverkusen vs Wolfsburg. Union Berlin vs Bayern Munich is also going to be a cracker. We run from Friday evening through to Sunday late afternoon in the Bundesliga this weekend, with Augsburg v Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt v RB Leipzig also fascinating matches worth keeping an eye on in a solid weekend of games.
The Serie A action this weekend has a few decent matches as well, with the plum clash taking place at the Stadio Olimpico between Roma and AC Milan on Sunday night. Verona v Juventus on Saturday will be worth a watch as well as Inter Milan hosting Udinese on the Sunday night.

Real Sociedad v Athletic Bilbao – Draw – 43/20
Sociedad have really impressed us all this season, particularly with their ability to close out certain tough games, and likely will be battling for Europe this year. But games against these types of teams are what separates teams like Sociedad from the likes of the Madrid two, and we could see them slipping up with a draw here.
Strasbourg v Lorient – Lorient win – 27/10
This is another game where we could have backed a draw, but ultimately you have to back the team that have accumulated more points, which is Lorient this time around, and we reckon they’ll sneak a win away from home here.
Leverkusen v Wolfsburg – Wolfsburg win – 27/10
Given what we have seen from these two sides thus far, there is real value in this match if you back a Wolfsburg win. They’re only four points behind Leverkusen, and this is a big six-pointer for the visitors who really need the result.
AS Roma v AC Milan – Draw – 47/20
This is going to be a cracker of a game if you really like the intricacies of football, and dreadful, unwatchable stuff if you’re a more casual supporter. These fixtures are historically cagey and we reckon they’ll struggle to break the stalemate as they cancel each other out.
