Manchester City vs West Ham Football Preview
West Ham are on track to have their best campaign in recent history, but a trip to the Etihad stands in the way of David Moyes’ side getting back to winning ways. Pep’s side outplayed a star-studded PSG in the week and City will be confident of turning over the high-flying Hammers.
The last time these two met was for a Carabao Cup tie in which the game was decided by penalties. 90 minutes worth of City attacks were met by a resilient West Ham defence, who forced the game to spot-kicks. It was Phil Foden’s miss that proved the decisive penalty as Said Benrahma stepped up to dispatch the winner.
The home side look back to their best after consecutive defeats to West Ham and Crystal Palace, putting together a four match win streak consisting of dominant victories over neighbours Man Utd and European giants PSG.
The Hammers have stuttered somewhat since that cup tie, tasting defeat in their most recent Premier League outing at the hands of an impressive Wolves side. Despite the loss, they remain in the top four and have qualified for the Europa League knockout stages as winners of Group H, yet to lose a game.
There are plenty of exciting tactical battles to keep an eye on in this match-up, with perhaps none more important than the one in midfield. Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice have been crucial in West Ham’s success this season, but it remains to be seen whether they can cope with the fluidity of City’s midfield and inverted full-backs.
Aside from winning the midfield battle, City will be tasked with dealing with the physicality of the visitors. Not only is Michail Antonio a constant nuisance and dominant presence up front, but West Ham have continuously looked dangerous from set-pieces – Kurt Zouma, Issa Diop and Craig Dawson are all imposing figures.
Our NetBet win probability counter suggests City are strong favourites at 74%. West Ham are seen as huge underdogs at 10%, with a draw looking more likely than an away win at 16%.

Both Teams to Score / Over 2.5 Goals – 21/10
West Ham proved against Liverpool that they aren’t willing to sit back against the big teams. They have a lot of quality in their attacking line and only Chelsea and Liverpool have scored more goals on the road than the Hammers. This attacking intent could open them up defensively however, which will play into the hands of Pep’s side.
Draw – 5/1
This represents great value for a game that really cold go either way. On their day, West Ham will give any team a run for their money, but City have tightened things up defensively this season and they are rarely beaten.
Michail Antonio First Goalscorer – 10/1
If West Ham can get their noses in front, they might just be able to pull off a spectacular away win. Antonio is always a threat, whether from build-up play, crosses or set-pieces. At 10/1 it looks good value, especially when the likes of James McAtee and Cole Palmer are priced as more likely to grab the opener!
