West Ham vs Chelsea Football Preview
Both camps will be happy with how their teams have started this season. As we enter December, Chelsea lead the way at the summit of the Premier League, whilst West Ham have outperformed expectations to sit just within the Champions League qualification places.
Tuchel has built his side from the back, relying on defensive solidarity to pick up impressive wins. With just five goals conceded in 13 games, Chelsea have the best defensive record in the league. In contrast, David Moyes’ side have trusted in their ability to outscore opponents. They have kept just two clean sheets, but their attacking ethos has seen them pick up high-scoring wins.
This is a fixture which could very much be won or lost on the wings. Aaron Cresswell and Ben Johnson will have the unenviable task of dealing with Chelsea’s wing-backs, whilst the likes of Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen will also be tasked with putting in a defensive shift.
As we would expect Tuchel’s side to control possession and dominate territory, the question remains as to whether West Ham’s wide-men will be able to transition quickly enough to support Michael Antonio. Moyes could be brave and instruct his wingers not to follow the runs of Chelsea’s wing-backs. This would give them space to counter should they win the ball back, but is also risky as it would allow Reece James and Marcos Alonso to overload the Hammers’ full-backs.
It will be an interesting tactical battle at the Olympic Stadium. West Ham have tended to be brave in these big games, with their 3-2 win over Liverpool a prime example. However, Chelsea have not lost in 11 games in all competitions and will be confident in taking all three points in East London.
Our NetBet win probability counter has the Blues as strong favourites for this game at 55%. West Ham are given just a 20% chance of victory, with a draw seen as more likely at 25%.

West Ham vs Chelsea Betting Tips
*Odds correct at the time of publication and are subject to change
Tie with Goals – 19/5
West Ham have scored in all but two of their Premier League games thus far, including finding the net against Liverpool, Man City and Man Utd. Pep’s side are the only team to stop Chelsea finding the net. Both will be confident in their attacking prowess and pose threats from set pieces. It will be a tight game that has every chance of ending all-square.
Chelsea to win by 1 goal – 9/4
If this game is going to have a winner, Chelsea look the slight favourites to claim it. We can’t see this ending with a thrashing for either side and all of West Ham’s meetings with the big sides have been decided by a single goal. We could see a tight affair in which Chelsea nick the win late on.
First Goalscorer – Romelu Lukaku – 4/1
The Belgian will be raring to go after his spell on the side-line and we expect he will probably start. Not only is he a threat when receiving the ball to feet, but can also dominate aerially with the crosses put in by Chelsea’s wing-backs. There wouldn’t be many better times for him to get back amongst the goals.
