2022 Australian Open Tournament Preview
In the build-up to the eagerly anticipated opening Grand Slam of 2022, all the focus has been on the controversy surrounding world number one Novak Djokovic. The Serbian’s visa was reinstated this week after previously having it revoked upon arrival, but the reigning Champion looks set to compete to retain the Grand Slam this month.
Despite the media circus surrounding the tennis star, Djokovic will go into the tournament as favourite, as he looks to claim his 10th Australian Open win and become the most acclaimed player of all time, leaving legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal behind on 20 titles each.
Whilst the world number two and three, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev make up the top three favourites, it is experienced players Nadal and Andy Murray that could make history by upsetting the odds. The Spaniard may have slipped down the pecking order in recent years, but he is capable of beating anyone on his day.
The same can be said for Murray, who will be making his first appearance at the Australian Open in three years, after gaining a wildcard to compete in the event. The 34 year-old may have dropped to 135 in the world rankings after a difficult couple of years, but the former number one can never be written off, and the odds on the Scotsman winning his first Australian Open title are huge.
World number one Ashleigh Barty is favourite in the women’s tournament, and the absence of Serena Williams due to injury has blown the draw wide open. Reigning Champion Naomi Osaka is second to the Australian in the odds, but she will be quietly confident in retaining her title and picking up her fifth Grand Slam victory.
There are some good odds on the teenagers Cori Gauff and Emma Radacanu if you think the youngsters have got what it takes to topple the experienced seniors in the competition. The latter made history last year when she joined the list of the top 10 youngest women ever to win a Grand Slam after getting her hands on the US Open.
There will be plenty of talent on show in the first Grand Slam of the year at Melbourne Park, with experienced winners looking to strengthen their legacies and emerging talents hoping to shock the world. We’ve put together our betting tips for the upcoming Australian Open.
2022 Australian Open Betting Odds and Tips
Novak Djokovic – 7/5
It’s hard to look past the favourite Novak Djokovic. The Serbian could make history with a win and take himself to the summit of all-time Grand Slam wins. The world number one has enjoyed unprecedented success at the Australian Open, winning the last three in a row and claiming the trophy on five occasions in the last seven years. He has been in fine form at major tournaments, winning three of last year’s four Grand Slams, finishing as runner-up in the only one he didn’t win. He’ll face some stiff competition, but there’s a reason Djokovic is favourite.
Rafael Nadal – 11/1
The Spaniard has been a consistent performer in this competition, reaching the final twice in the last five years. He’ll be looking to avenge his 2019 defeat to Djokovic this time round, as he tries to break his rival’s dominance in Australia. 2021 wasn’t Nadal’s most successful year, but he certainly has the quality to bounce back.
Naomi Osaka – 5/1
The world number 14 is another player who has enjoyed plenty of success at this tournament in recent years. Osaka has won two of the last three Australian Opens, and with Serena Williams incapable of competing due to injury, that is one less obstacle standing in the way of back-to-back Grand Slam victories in Australia for the Japanese star.
Emma Raducanu – 25/1
Raducanu looks destined for greatness after she upset the odds to pull off an incredible win at the US Open. The 19 year-old is only going to get better, and with her resilient attitude, we wouldn’t be surprised to see her go deep into the competition. 25/1 looks good odds for the rising star, and it’s worth keeping an eye on the odds for her to reach the final once the tournament is underway.
