The Players Championship Preview
Justin Thomas shot four under on the final day of last year’s tournament to seal his first Players Championship title. The world number eight was four shots behind the front-runner Lee Westwood, but a phenomenal start to the back nine allowed the American to take a lead which he refused to give up. Thomas is currently the joint favourite to retain his title, but given that no player has won back-to-back Players Championships, you can’t write off the rest of the field just yet.
World number one Jon Rahm is the other favourite, with the Spaniard looking to improve upon last year’s T9 finish and repeat the exploits of his compatriot Sergio Garcia, who was crowned champion in 2008. Although Rahm tops the rankings, he has not won an event since being crowned U.S Open champion in June last year.
Dynamic youngsters Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland are two names to keep an eye on going into this year’s Players Championship. The reigning Open champion had a successful 2021 and finished T2 in the recent Genesis Invitational, whilst the Norwegian Hovland has already secured three top five finishes in 2022, as well as a win at the Dubai Desert Classic.
The Players Championship Betting Tips
Collin Morikawa to win – 16/1
The American was back somewhere close to his best in the Genesis Invitational just a few weeks ago. An impressive six under final round took Morikawa to within two shots of the eventual winner Joaquin Niemann, eclipsing the likes of Thomas, Rahm and McIlroy in the process. He will face plenty of stiff competition from Europeans and Americans, but on his day there’s not many that can get close.
Top European: Viktor Hovland – 6/1
The Norwegian picked up his first win of the year at the Dubai Desert Classic in January, extending his incredible run of form from the backend of 2021. Hovland has now won in three of his last eight outings, picking up top five finishes on three other occasions. The youngster will face a much more competitive field in Florida than he did in Dubai, but the big hitter looks set to have another incredible year.
Top 5 Finish: Shane Lowry – 9/1
Shane Lowry seemed to find some form in the recent Honda Classic, finishing second in a strong field. There won’t be too many expecting the Irishman to come out on top, but with the strong winds that are being forecast, there’s every chance Lowry could utilise his flat striking technique to climb his way up the leaderboard. If the blustery conditions last for four full days, Lowry at 42/1 looks a good outside bet.
