Euro 2022: Semi-Final
England vs Sweden
Tuesday 26th July, 8pm
Bramall Lane, Sheffield
England vs Sweden Football Preview
Sarina Wiegman will be hoping she can rid England of their semi-final woes, and if anyone can do it, it’s the two-time Best FIFA Women’s Coach. The Dutch manager guided the Netherlands to the Euro 2017 title, as well as taking them to the 2019 World Cup final. The hosts will be favourites going into the game, but the world number two could prove their toughest test yet.
Sweden were dominant in their quarter-final against Belgium. Although they needed a 92nd minute winner to advance, they registered 34 shots compared to their opponents’ three and had a goal disallowed in the first half. The win marked a 33rd straight game undefeated in 90 minutes, a streak which has seen them rise to the summit of the world rankings.
Sweden have typically had the best of this fixture over the years. They have been victorious in eight of 13 meetings, including the most recent third place play-off at the 2019 World Cup. Peter Gerhardsson’s side have competed in all but one Euros since the competition began in 1984, winning it once, finishing as runners-up three times, and clinching third place on four occasions.
England face a real challenge on Tuesday night, but they have never been in a better position to achieve greatness. The Lionesses’ squad boasts a delicate blend of blossoming youth and sturdy experience, and they are now coached by an experienced winner. They will almost certainly need to better their performance against Spain if they are to book a place at Wembley, but they’ll be quietly confident in doing so.
Despite the history of meetings between these nations, the NetBet win probability counter gives England a 51% chance of victory, whilst Sweden are given just a 22% chance. A draw in 90 minutes is seen as more likely than a Sweden win at 27%.
England vs Sweden Football Odds
The early money is on the hosts who are strong favourites heading into the tie at 4/5. Sweden will be without some key players for the semi-final, and as a result, they are priced at a tempting 3/1. A draw can be backed at 5/2.
England vs Sweden Betting Tips
England win and both to score – 3/1
England will be raring to go in this one. Sweden are missing a few players, and although they will still threaten, the Lionesses will be expected to get over the line. With the home crowd behind them, they should have the momentum to book a place in the final.
Draw in 90 minutes – 5/2
Sweden are number two in the world for a reason – they have quality throughout. You can never write them off, and no nation has reached this stage more often. They will certainly cause the Lionesses problems, and these are cracking odds.
First goalscorer: Beth Mead – 5/1
England’s main threat throughout, Beth Mead has been on fire. She was nullified in the quarter-final, but no player has looked more threatening in front of goal. She will be key in any chance England have of claiming the crown.
