England v Germany Preview
The old foes meet once again in a major international final and this time, the Lionesses and Die Nationalelf should produce a match to remember on the biggest stage of all.
Both teams have had fantastic tournament to get all the way to the last two. England, under Sarina Wiegman, started sloppily but have since eased their way through the knockout stages, thrashing Sweden 4-0 in the semis on a historic night in Sheffield.
Wiegman’s influence on this side should not be underestimated. She has had 19 games in charge, winning 17 with only four goals conceded and they need every ounce of her knowhow to beat off Germany.
However, the Germans have a wealth of experience and winning big tournaments has been second nature for Die Nationalelf over the years. Captain Alexandra Popp stepped up when she was needed, with two goals against France in their semi-final on a nervy night at Stadium MK.
What England have, though, is a wave of momentum and national support ahead of one of England’s biggest games since the 1966 World Cup final. They have improved with each and every match and seem to be peaking at the right team. Can they turn a dream into reality on Sunday?
England v Germany Odds
The Lionesses are slight favourites at 7/5 with Germany 19/10. With it likely to be a close game in north-west London, the draw is 11/5 after 90 minutes.
England v Germany Betting Tips
Beth Mead to score first – 11/2
Mead has been in stellar form all tournament with six goals to her name. The Golden Boot is surely going to be hers, regardless of the result on Sunday. However, she has a chance to break the record for most goals at a women’s international tournament and overtake Inka Grings’ achievement. She is full of confidence and scored a wonderful opener against Sweden. The stage is set for Mead to become a Lionesses legend!
England to win 2-1 – 27/4
With the way these two sides match-up, this is sure to be an extremely tight affair. Germany can target England early as the Lionesses have shown a very small chink in their armour in the opening exchanges, with slow starts not yet costing them. Here, though, is a different proposition so expect England to be on it from the first whistle. Both sides have quality throughout and goalscorers in abundance. However, we think Wiegman’s team can edge out the Germans for a historic first Euros.
Time of first goal (11th to 20 minute) – 19/5
The opening 10 minutes of this game will be vital. An early goal for either side could be pivotal as when in the lead, both teams are notoriously difficult to break down. However, we think a relatively early strike is on the cards here with the quality both nations possess.
