Liverpool vs Manchester City Football Preview
We are just a couple of months into the season and Liverpool already find themselves 14 points off the top of the table and six points adrift of the top four. Jurgen Klopp’s side have won just twice in their opening eight league games, with a number of injuries and lack of form causing persistent problems on Merseyside. Things don’t get any easier as they prepare to host a Man City team brimming with confidence.
Pep Guardiola’s side have not lost since that Community Shield defeat to Liverpool, winning 10 of their 13 games in all competitions since. They make the trip to Anfield having kept four clean sheets in their last five games, scoring 18 in the process. Erling Haaland has now been on the scoresheet in 10 consecutive appearances and is set to smash all English goalscoring records should he maintain his fitness this season.
Liverpool will take some hope from their recent form in this fixture – they have lost just once in their last six meetings with City. In fact, on home soil they have lost just one league game in nearly 20 years against the Sky Blues. The injury to Luis Diaz will no doubt be a major blow to Klopp’s plans, but Roberto Firmino is in a rich vein of goalscoring form and Mo Salah can never be written off.
In spite of their less than impressive record on the road in this fixture, you’d have to think City will fancy their chances against a wounded Liverpool. Not only is Diaz missing, there are also fears that Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip could also be sidelined through injury. You get the feeling that the Reds are there for the taking, whilst City are playing some of the best football we’ve seen over the years.
Liverpool vs Manchester City Football Odds
City are huge favourites (13/18) heading into the match, with a Liverpool win and draw both priced at 31/10. Both teams to score is still seen as extremely likely (6/13) regardless of Liverpool’s turbulent form, with Haaland leading the odds (59/22) to open the scoring.
Liverpool vs Manchester City Betting Tips
*Odds correct at the time of publication and subject to change.
Man City win and both teams to score – 16/9
This seems the most likely outcome. Liverpool will certainly threaten and have more than enough to get on the scoresheet, but City have just been so good recently it’s tough to bet against them.
Phil Foden first goalscorer – 7/1
Whilst Haaland might seem the obvious choice, we like the look of Foden in this one. Liverpool’s back four will no doubt have strict instructions on dealing with Haaland, and that might just free up a bit of space for City’s other attackers. Foden has netted four in his last two league games and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.
