Tottenham vs Newcastle Football Preview
After a disappointing midweek defeat at the hands of top four rivals Manchester United, Spurs will be hoping to get back on track on matchday 13 against Newcastle. Antonio Conte’s side were poor in their last outing, resulting in only a second defeat in 11 games thus far. They will take confidence from their 100% home record, but the Magpies will prove yet another tough test in this wide-open campaign.
Newcastle extended their unbeaten run to six with a dominant 1-0 victory over Everton on Wednesday. A third win in four put them just two points outside the Champions League spots as we approach a third of the way through the season. They make the trip south with the best defensive record in the league, with only Arsenal having conceded fewer on the road. Eddie Howe’s side are brimming with confidence and will no doubt fancy their chances of nicking the points in North London.
Spurs will want to see a little more from Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son after they failed to have an impact at Old Trafford, with the hosts’ results largely dependant on the form of their main men – only one of their victories has come without either of their dynamic duo finding the net. They face a tough task in breaking down an impenetrable Newcastle defence that has kept a clean sheet in five out of 11 matches.
The visitors will take their typical defence-first approach that has served them well this season, but they pose a huge threat going forward. Bruno Guimaraes is blossoming into a special talent and is central to everything positive that the Magpies do. Miguel Almiron is also in the best form of his Newcastle career, with four goals in his last three games making this his most prolific Premier League campaign yet.
It will be an interesting battle between two defences that have typically not given much away. The midfield battle will be crucial, with Spurs potentially looking to overload and nullify the creative capacity of Guimaraes.
Tottenham vs Newcastle Football Odds
Despite midweek defeat, Spurs (2.04) go into the tie as strong favourites, with a draw (3.50) and Newcastle win (3.40) priced similarly. With two sturdy defences on show, under 2.5 goals (1.98) looks a solid option, with under 1.5 (3.80) offering even better returns should you think a single goal is enough to win it.
Tottenham vs Newcastle Betting Tips
*Odds correct at the time of publication and are subject to change.
Draw and under 2.5 goals – 4.60
There’s something about this Newcastle team – you feel like they can get a result wherever they go. Points at Old Trafford and the Etihad are testament to that. Neither side will be willing to overcommit, and we could see a drab 0-0 or low-scoring draw.
Kane anytime goalscorer – 2.18
He can’t be kept quiet for long – history tells us that. He has found the net in four of Spurs’ last five Premier League games, is a threat from set-pieces and takes penalties. Not a bad shout to more than double your money.
