Qatar vs Ecuador
You can never underestimate the power of a home crowd. In their World Cup debut, Qatar will be desperate to kick things off with a win in front of a roaring Al Bayt Stadium. And they’re not short of talent either. They were crowned Asian Cup champions in 2019, beating South Korea and Japan on the way to lifting the trophy.
Ecuador will provide a tough first test, but they are not the same side they once were. They have failed to score more than one goal in a match in 2022 and have been held to a 0-0 draw by Saudi Arabia and Iraq in the last two months. The hosts seem massively underpriced for the World Cup opener.
Qatar win – 3.32
Score prediction: 1-0
England vs Iran
It’s undoubtedly going to be about that all-important first goal. If England can get it early and force Iran out of their low block, they should cruise to a comfortable victory. But if Iran can hold on for as long as possible, the travelling English fans might start to become restless. Iran will put up a good fight, but this England team is flooded with class.
Gareth Southgate will likely field an extremely attacking side, and providing they can avoid being caught on the transition, they shouldn’t have too much trouble dispatching of the world’s number 20. Iran picked up an impressive win over Uruguay and a hard-earned point against Senegal in recent friendlies, but England will be fired up as they go in search of a second major trophy.
England win – 1.32
Score prediction: 3-0
Senegal vs Netherlands
Netherlands will be making their first World Cup appearance since 2014 after failing to qualify for the previous tournament. They will head to Qatar under the guidance of Louis van Gaal, who is yet to taste defeat in his third managerial spell with the nation. Since taking over following Netherlands’ round of 16 exit at Euro 2020, van Gaal’s side have won 11 and drawn 4 of their 15 matches. They will be favourites to kick off their campaign with a win against Senegal.
The African Cup of Nations champions will be hoping to repeat the heroics which saw them reach the quarter-finals at World Cup 2002, but a tough group stands in their way. Senegal have an incredibly strong squad featuring players from across Europe’s major leagues, but it remains to be seen how early superstar Sadio Mane will be able to feature. With or without the Bayern winger, we expect the Netherlands to edge Senegal out in a close affair.
Netherlands win – 1.57
Score prediction: 1-2
USA vs Wales
Whilst Wales boast the more well-rounded squad heading into the World Cup, USA could be one-to-watch. The likes of Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna and Tim Weah form a dynamic attack which will cause the group problems, but you get the feeling they might be a little light defensively. They will fancy their chances in a World Cup opener against Wales, but will do well to take all three points.
Wales are one of those nations that embody the spirit of the World Cup, with hard work and passion driving them all the way to the Euro 2016 semi-final. Gareth Bale loves international football, and on his day, there is no defence that can stop him. These two look evenly matched, with a score draw our final prediction.
Draw – 2.88
Score prediction: 1-1
