Switzerland vs Cameroon
Having failed to win any of their four World Cup preparation games, Cameroon will head into their first fixture as huge underdogs against Switzerland. Defeats against Uzbekistan and South Korea, as well as draws against Jamaica and Panama will not have filled fans with hope, and they face a tricky opening tie against a strong side.
Switzerland have put together some impressive performances in the last few months. Despite finishing third in their Nations League group, they beat Spain, Portugal and Czech Republic in their last three games. They have a very well-rounded squad featuring an abundance of talent from across Europe’s major leagues. They should win, and they should do so comfortably.
Switzerland win – 1.78
Score prediction: 2-0
Uruguay vs South Korea
Uruguay will be a fun team to watch at the World Cup. An attack consisting of Darwin Nunez, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani promises fireworks, with an incredible number of career goals and a killer finishing instinct. They also have one of the most talented youth prospects in world football with Federico Valverde. He has set La Liga alight for Real Madrid and will be looking to make his mark on the international stage.
South Korea will provide stiff opposition, but they lack a strong core. It remains to be seen how big a part Heung-Min Son will play, and if he doesn’t feature at all, that could destroy any real hope South Korea have of qualifying. We can see Uruguay keeping a seventh clean sheet in eight games.
Uruguay win – 1.74
Score prediction: 1-0
Portugal vs Ghana
This Ghana team could provide some surprises in the group stage. A defence consisting of Premier League talent in Tariq Lamptey, Daniel Amartey and Mohamed Salisu is solid. Holding midfielder Thomas Partey is having a superb season for Arsenal, and a potential strike-force of Inaki Williams and Jordan Ayew is exciting. Unfortunately for Ghana fans, this is one of the strongest Portugal squads we have seen in a long time.
Boasting world class talent across the pitch, they will fancy their chances of going all the way. Question marks surround what will be done with an out of form Cristiano Ronaldo, but you’d fancy Portugal to top this group regardless of Ronaldo’s inclusion. They could be a dark horse in Qatar.
Portugal win – 1.36
Score prediction: 3-0
Brazil vs Serbia
Many people’s tip to win the World Cup, Brazil will have to navigate a tough opening match against Serbia. Serbia finished at the summit of both their World Cup qualifying group and their Nations League group. Star striker Aleksandr Mitrovic is in scintillating form for Fulham, and he will likely be partnered by Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic. They will cause Brazil serious problems.
However, led by all-time superstar Neymar, Brazil should just have enough to get over the line. They have one of the best goalkeepers in the world with Alisson, an incredibly experienced defence, industrious midfield, and bundles of attacking flair. This could be their year.
Brazil win – 1.48
Score prediction: 2-1
