What is Motor Racing?
Motor Racing, one of the world’s most popular and high-profile sports, is a group of events that mainly involve the use of motorised automobiles and vehicles (cars, bikes, karts, boats, snowmobiles, trucks, etc.) for either competitive racing or recreational purposes.
These races usually take place on closed-circuit tracks, roads, and drag strips made of dirt and asphalt. In professional Motor Sport Racing, breakdowns and crashes during races are the norm, so it’s safe to say that this sport is not for the faint of heart. The exhilarating and stimulating nature of Motor Racing has garnered a massive international audience of not only spectators but sports bettors as well. Formula 1, NASCAR Cup, British Superbike Championship, and Grand Prix are some events that are closely followed by the masses.
Since Motor Racing is a sport that covers many bases, it’s natural for them to have many local, national, and international governing bodies. The most significant of which are the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), which govern four and two-wheeled racing competitions, respectively.
History of Motor Racing
Soon after the development of petrol-fueled automobiles with a working internal combustion engine in the 19th century, what is thought to be the first motor race competition from Paris to Rouen and back was organised by the Parisian magazine Le Petit Journal in 1894. It was more of a reliability test than a race around 80 km long and served the purpose of helping European inventors work out any kinks in their self-propelled automobiles and their designs.
The first real motor race took place in France in 1895, covering a distance of 1,178 kilometres from Paris to Bordeaux and back. The winner of the race, Émile Levassor, drove a Panhard-Levassor 1205 cc model and completed the course in 48 hours and 47 minutes, with a 24.15 kph average speed. An 87-kilometre race from Chicago to Evanston and back marked the beginning of organised Motor Racing in America on Thanksgiving Day in 1895. With the help of press coverage, the event was promoted and was responsible for arousing the interest of Americans in the sport.
The first close-circuit race, the Course de Périgueux, was conducted in 1898 in France. Such racing events, governed by the Automobile Club de France, became mainstream in Europe except for Wales, Scotland, and England. Aspendale Racecourse was established in 1906 in Australia and became the first dedicated motor racing track in the world. Many international Motor Racing events were organised all throughout the first half of the 1900s. Perhaps the most prominent event of them all, NASCAR was founded by Bill France Sr. The first NASCAR “Strictly Stock” race was held the very next year at Daytona Beach, Florida and significantly boosted the Motor Racing industry.
