Wales vs England Football Preview
A dull 0-0 draw against USA means England still have work to do against Wales on Tuesday night. However, only a complete disaster would see Gareth Southgate’s side bailed out before the knockouts. A point would be enough to see the Three Lions progress, and they could even afford to lose, as long as it’s not by four goals.
There is a lot more at stake than just the points. It’s always a big occasion when the home nations meet at a major tournament. After a crushing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Iran, Wales will be looking to restore some pride and give the fans back home something to cheer against rivals England.
Getting Gareth Bale more of the ball will be vital if Wales are to cause an upset. The Welsh hero was anonymous against Iran and had little to no impact on the game. Without Bale at his best, this looks an uphill battle for Rob Page’s side.
Southgate will just be looking for improvement after a disappointing performance on Friday night. There was no control and no penetration in an England shirt, and the game passed by without a clear-cut chance having been created.
There’s a good chance Southgate will rotate as he looks ahead to the next phase, but that could backfire. A defeat against rivals could put a huge dent in the England camp’s confidence before important knockout games. Even with a rotated side England will be favourites, but it certainly won’t be a walk in the park.
Wales vs England Football Odds
England are massive 1.40 favourites, with a draw at 4.70 and Wales win at 8.30. Both teams to score (2.05) looks good value, as does the over four yellow (2.45) cards market – this one could get tasty. Unsurprisingly, Kane (3.98) is leading the odds to open the scoring as he chases down Wayne Rooney’s England record.
Betting Tips
England win 2-1 – 8.20
There has to be an improvement after the USA game. England are favourites for a reason, but it will be closer than the odds suggest. But for all Wales’ passion and fight, they haven’t beaten England in a long time – 34 years to be precise.
Over 4 yellow cards – 2.45
Things could get a little feisty if frustrations start boiling over. A Euro 2012 qualifier springs to mind, when seven players were booked in a 2-0 England win.
Bale anytime scorer & under 3.5 goals – 7.30
If it’s going to be anyone, it’s going to be Bale. So often the man for the big occasion, the nation’s hopes rest on his shoulders.
