Now the dust has settled on Argentina’s historic World Cup triumph, we’ve picked out NetBet’s Team of the Tournament. For all the latest football markets and betting odds, head to NetBet.
GK – Bono
Morocco were virtually impenetrable. Until France, they hadn’t conceded a goal scored by an opposite player. Bono was key, and there will be a few clubs lining up to secure the Sevilla man’s signature.
RB – Achraf Hakimi
Proved he is world class yet again. A constant threat down Morocco’s right with Hakim Ziyech. Solid at the back and oozing class going forward. He’ll be one of the best for years to come.
CB – Josko Gvardiol
A rock at the heart of a sturdy Croatian backline. Showed all the grit and physicality we expect from Croatia, but also the ball-playing technique that has him linked with the biggest clubs in Europe. Eventually undone by a sparkling Lionel Messi.
CB – Cristian Romero
His World Cup final performance alone was enough to earn him a spot in NetBet’s XI. Tenacious without the ball and monumental in the air. Did a fair bit of covering for Nicolas Otamendi’s lack of pace. Spurs have a good one on their hands with the 24-year-old.
LB – Ivan Perisic
Had to squeeze him in somewhere. Consistently Croatia’s best player. As effective at left wing as he is at left back, Perisic is one of those that appears to never age. Scored the all-important equaliser to take the round of 16 to extra time. Barely missed a minute.
CM – Jude Bellingham
One of the brightest sparks at the World Cup. Jude Bellingham is already world class at just 19. Whoever signs him form Dortmund has one of the very best in their ranks. A leader on the pitch, aggressive with and without the ball, composure in the final third – he deserved more from the tournament.
CM – Sofyan Ambrabat
If you didn’t know the name before, you certainly do now. Covered every blade of grass for Morocco. Instrumental in building their immense defensive record with his break-up play. An absolute dream to play alongside, Amrabat does the dirty work that makes his talented teammates shine. Will almost definitely secure a big move in summer.
CM – Bruno Fernandes
Rated by many statisticians as the best player at the entire tournament. Almost everything Portugal created came through him. Unlucky to bail out at the quarter-finals against a history-making Morocco side.
RW – Lionel Messi
What can you say? The best of all time finally got his hands on the most prestigious sporting trophy. Seven goals and three assists, he continues to glide across the pitch as if age is just a construct. The coolest man in the stadium in the highest-pressure situations. We might never see a player so gifted and it was a fitting way to end a remarkable World Cup.
ST – Julian Alvarez
This kid’s stock has risen some. A perfect supporting act to Messi, Alvarez did all of the star man’s running, whilst also finding the net four times himself. Just 22-years-old, what a career the young striker has ahead of him.
LW – Kylian Mbappe
Heartbreaking scenes watching Mbappe walk past the trophy. Only the second man to score a World Cup final hat-trick, and he did it at 23. France’s leader, he is capable of flipping any game on its head in a matter of seconds. Undoubtedly will be the best in the world for the next decade, he’ll be back.
