Leicester vs Newcastle
This is a tasty little clash to get things started. Leicester had started to turn their form around prior to the World Cup break and returned to domestic football with a dominant 3-0 EFL Cup win over MK Dons. Brendan Rodgers will have been working hard to get the Foxes back where they need to be, but a visit from Newcastle is one of the trickier games he could have hoped for.
The Magpies should be at full strength, and they’ve proven this season that not too many can beat them when they are. They have still not lost a game since August, with a 1-0 cup win over Bournemouth marking seven consecutive wins. How long can Eddie Howe keep this up for? We reckon a little longer.
Newcastle to win – 2.17
Southampton vs Brighton
The international break came at the worst possible time for Brighton – they had just started to really get going under the new boss. Although their first ever World Cup winner, Alexis Mac Allister, is probably still celebrating on the streets of Argentina, we’re backing the Seagulls to get straight back to winning ways against Southampton.
Nathan Jones has the unenviable task of flipping this dreadful Southampton season on its head, but it will take time. Unfortunately, it’s time Jones has not got. Another couple of defeats and the Saints will find themselves slipping further and further away from safety.
Brighton to win – 2.09
Crystal Palace vs Fulham
One of three London derbies on Boxing Day, this promises to be a cracker. Crystal Palace are notoriously strong at Selhurst Park – in fact, only five teams have picked up more points on home soil than the Eagles. However, Marc Guehi’s suspension will be a huge miss, especially given the physicality Fulham will utilise in Aleksandr Mitrovic.
The Cottagers have been a consistent thorn in the side of the Premier League. They are incredibly difficult to play against, and Mitrovic is practically unstoppable on his day. The two are evenly matched, and that could well be reflected in the scoreline.
Draw – 3.52
Aston Villa vs Liverpool
It was looking like a season to forget early on for Liverpool fans, but they have slowly but surely clawed their way back up the Premier League table. However, they still find themselves seven points adrift of the top four. Jurgen Klopp’s Reds simply cannot afford to drop too many more points or they might find themselves missing out on the Champions League.
Aston Villa showed some very positive early signs under Unai Emery. They are more than capable of testing this Liverpool back four, but the gulf in class should be apparent across 90 minutes. Mo Salah will be raring to go – there aren’t many that can stop the Egyptian once he gets going.
Liverpool to win – 1.72
