Villarreal vs Real Madrid
We’re kicking off our European journey on the east coast of Spain, where seventh place Villarreal take on Real Madrid. Los Blancos are breathing down the neck of league leaders Barcelona, and three points could see them top the table should the Catalan club fall short at Atletico. No team has picked up more points on the road than Madrid – 21 from a possible 24 – and they have lost just once this season.
Villarreal are also in fine form, particularly at home, but they haven’t had much success of late against the Spanish giants. In fact, the last time the Yellow Submarine claimed all three points from Madrid was 2018. In the nine meetings since, they have drawn six and lost three. It’s always a close affair when they meet, but covering the draw and backing the visitors looks a solid option.
Real Madrid double chance – 1.31
AC Milan vs Roma
It’s Serie A up next, as champions AC Milan look to close the gap on Napoli at the summit. They face another tricky test against Roma, but it is a fixture which they have typically excelled in. They are unbeaten in five (4 wins, 1 draw) against this weekend’s opposition, and are in far superior form ahead of the tie. When you also factor in Milan have won seven of their eight league games at the San Siro this campaign, they look the more likely to take all three points.
The visitors have been impressive away from home this season, but they have only faced two of the league’s top six on the road. They come up just short against Milan more often than not.
AC Milan win – 1.86
Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona
Any other year you’d avoid backing anyone travelling to the Metropolitano, but it’s not quite clicked for Diego Simeone’s men on home soil this season. Their home record ranks 13th in La Liga, with 11 points won in seven games. In contrast, Barcelona trail only Real Madrid for points won and goals scored away from home, whilst boasting the best away defensive record.
Any slip up and Xavi’s side could surrender the league initiative to their biggest rivals. But it’s difficult to see them dropping points. Robert Lewandowski is set to add another golden boot to his extensive trophy cabinet and could be the difference in this match.
Barcelona win – 2.26
