Tottenham vs Chelsea Football Preview
After winning just once in their eight Premier League matches in 2023, Chelsea have fallen to 10th, 11 points adrift of the top four. But in spite of their dreadful year thus far, Ray Parlour thinks Chelsea have to stick with the coach that worked miracles at Brighton.
“I’m still waiting for it to click for Chelsea. I’m amazed really. I’m scratching my head a little bit with them – there are lots of new players, but you have to give Graham Potter time.”
Amidst rumours that Mauricio Pochettino was approached as a potential replacement at Stamford Bridge, it remains to be seen how long the new owners will be willing to give Potter. A lot has been made of their spending under Todd Boehly, but Parlour thinks the lack of striker is a major hindrance.
“The only area they didn’t really strengthen is at centre forward. They just haven’t got a goalscorer. Felix is more of a number 10; he sits in behind, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s time at Chelsea seems over already, and Havertz just isn’t really working.”
“They need a proper striker this summer. They’ll always create chances but if you can’t score you’ll struggle.”
Although currently occupying a spot in the top four, Spurs are hardly firing on all cylinders. Less than two weeks ago they capitulated at the King Power, getting beat 4-1 by Leicester. With Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma struggling with injuries, Parlour thinks Chelsea can dominate in the midfield battle.
“It’s not perfect at Tottenham. Son has gone quiet and Spurs are a little light in midfield – I think that’s where Enzo Fernandez could have a good game for Chelsea.”
“I think Chelsea might beat them.”
London Derby Football Odds
Tottenham will go into the derby as slight favourites at 2.48, with a Chelsea win at 2.80 and a draw priced at 3.23. Chelsea have struggled for goals this season but both teams to score remains heavily backed at 1.73, with either side to keep a clean sheet enough to double your money at 2.03.
The Premier League’s second top scorer Harry Kane (4.50) is leading the odds to break the deadlock, with Heung-Min Son (7.60) and Arnaut Danjuma (7.70) making up the top three for Spurs. Chelsea’s top scorer this campaign is Kai Havertz and the German is priced at 8.30 to open the scoring on Sunday.
Tottenham vs Chelsea Betting Tips
Draw – 3.23
Chelsea have a good record in this fixture – their last league defeat against Tottenham was in 2018 and they have won four of their previous five against their London neighbours. But it’s tough to see them claiming all three points on the road given how poor they have been of late.
Under 2.5 goals – 1.82
Eight of the last 14 matches between these sides have seen fewer than 2.5 goals. Six of Tottenham’s last nine and each of Chelsea’s last six matches have seen under 2.5 goals.
Under 1 Chelsea goal – 2.07
Chelsea have not scored more than once in a game in 10 outings in 2023. In fact, they have failed to find the net at all in six of them. A good opportunity to double your money if Spurs can keep a clean sheet or your stake returned if Chelsea net once.
