As it heads into its third day, the Cheltenham Festival sees punters preparing for another day of enthralling action. Here at NetBet, we have decided to put our expert tipster to the test and have asked him to cast an eye over all four days of action. Cheltenham provides the highest quality horse racing worldwide; for many, it is considered the season’s highlight.
We are also running a fantastic promotion across all four days where you can get a Free Bet of up to £10 if the horse you backed finishes 2nd to the SP Favourite in any live ITV race.
Cheltenham Festival Day Three
Wednesday 16th March
Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
Live on ITV
The 2023 Cheltenham Festival sees four days of pulsating action at one of the most famous venues in the world. Day three is full of intriguing races and is always fun to attend if you can. Our betting expert has a selection for all the races on day three and believes there is some great value out there. Check out this racecard and see if you agree with our expert selections.
13:30 – Turners Novices’ Chase
What a fantastic race to start the day! With a competitive field, it is perhaps the most difficult race to predict over the four days. Our expert does believe there is some excellent value to be had in this race and has selected two outsiders below.
Last year this race remarkably only consisted of four runners. This year though, sees a vast field, and a quick look at the odds will display why this one is so difficult to call. Mighty Potter is the favourite for this race, but our expert believes another horse also stands a great chance of winning. Considering the odds for Potter are low, you might want to seek other options if you want better value.
Tip: Mighty Potter 11/10
Outsider: Appreciate It 3/1
14:10 – Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle
This is another race which has often been difficult to predict. This three-mile race which happens to be the final handicap race of the festival, has seen the last three winners priced 25/1 and above. Therefore if you like to place outsider bets, this race might be the one for you. Irish runners have recently dominated this race, winning six of the last seven.
Thanksforthehelp is priced as the favourite for this race and stands a great chance of winning, but the value bet has all of us excited.
Favourite: Thanksforthehelp 9/2
Value: Walking On Air 8/1
14:50 – The Ryanair Steeple Chase
This race was only introduced in 2005 but has already brought us so many memories and, for many, is considered the highlight of day three.
Allaho has shone a light on this race in recent years. He hasn’t been seen this season, but that could all be because the focus is going into completing an impressive hat trick. This is a feat rarely seen in horse racing, so achieving this at Cheltenham will be extra special.
William Mullins again has won five of the last seven races as he continues to stamp his name all over this festival. Blue Lord might give him another victory this year, and it is our betting experts’ tips for the year.
Tip: Blue Lord 5/1
Favourite: Shiskin 4/6
15:30 – The Stayers’ Hurdle
This race is the highlight of the day in our expert’s view. A hurdle race over three miles means all possibilities should be kept open until one horse takes an unassailable lead. He also believes this is the most open field we have seen in years. Unlike some other races at the festival, this has been a much more difficult race to assert dominance on.
There are a lot of good horses on display here, and below are two selections our betting expert believes are capable of causing an upset.
Outsider: Flooring Porter 5/1
Danger: Teahupoo 7/2
16:10 – Handicap Chase
If history is anything to go by, selecting potential over experience might be the way to go here. In the last decade, this race has been won by novice horses.
Last year was thrilling as 11-year-old Coole Cody landed the big prize. Priced at 22/1, this was considered quite the upset. This made him the joint-oldest winner since 1991. This year our betting expert has decided to back another outsider.
Favourite: So Scottish 10/3
Outsider: Haut En Couleurs 8/1
16:50 – The Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle
You might not be surprised to know by now that Willie Mullins had a complete stranglehold on this race until, thankfully, his monopoly was broken in 2020. Last year the first-ever British trainer won this race; Harry Fry was delighted as he wrote his name into the Cheltenham Festival history books. Like London buses, Ahorsewithnoname placed second last year, resulting in a British 1-2.
Luccia, trained by Nicky Henderson, made her debut in November and has not been seen since but is considered the favourite for this race. Our betting expert has selected two horses he believes to have an outstanding chance of winning.
Tip: Luccia 13/8
Outsider: Lot of Joy 6/1
17:30 – Handicap Steeple Chase
Leaving the best to last is an adage often used and practised, and this is precisely the case here. By this time of the day, punters have had the time of their life, and before they head on home, they feel they can squeeze one more race in.
Stumptown is 7/2 to win this race and is heavily fancied to win, but our betting expert doesn’t think this bet presents great value. Therefore he has selected two horses he thinks NetBet punters should be all over.
Value: Mr Incredible 5/1
Danger: Angels Down 6/1
