Wolverhampton Wanderers v Brighton and Hove Albion
Last time these two met, Wolverhampton were humbled by Roberto de Zerbi’s men. It was a 6:0 thumping for the Seagulls and it could well be another rough fixture for the Wanderers. After a managerial meltdown right before the season and losing starman Ruben Neves on the eve of this season, Wolves could well find themselves right in amongst the relegation battle, while Brighton continue to go from strength to strength.
But the South Coast Seagulls have lost most of their starting midfield, with Macallister going to Liverpool and, eventually, losing Moisés Caicedo to Chelsea. They will need to re-shuffle things and go again this year. With European football to worry about and higher expectations; De Zerbi will have his work cut out. However they have started well and Brighton continue to prove they are here, and here to stay. As they travel to the Molineux on the back of an opening say win, Brighton will be soaring.
Brighton to win – 1.68
Score prediction: 1 – 4
Fulham v Brentford
An all London encounter with bragging rights up for grabs. Brentford are going to be an interesting watch this year. After some good results last season and competently staying up, Thomas Frank’s men will need to watch out for ‘second season syndrome.’ The rest of the league will have a far better understanding of their styles and game plan. Also, without star man Ivan Toney could things unravel in West London or will Frank continue to surprise? They were good against Spurs last week but needed to hang on slightly towards the end.
Last year, Fulham surprised most of us. Normally soft, flakey and relegation candidates they were very good last year and well worth their finish. With a good win at Everton on the opening day they will be confident and hoping to grab another win. Marco Silva has been a revelation for Fulham and it seems Mitrovic has finally found his feet in the top flight. With two sides well managed and looking confident, it’s a hard one to call this.
Fulham win – 2.56
Score prediction 2 – 0
Liverpool v Bournemouth
You can’t mention this fixture without thinking about the 9:0. It was a spectacular day in Premier League history. Bournemouth fans won’t thank me for the reminder as this fixture rolls around again. However a lot has changed since that fixture way back at the start of last season’s campaign. The landscape looks very different. You’d still worry if you’re a cherry heading to Anfield though, wouldn’t you? The Reds played well against Chelsea in an even contest. They will be hoping for a statement victory at home to really get their new season off the mark.
With plenty of new signings who are yet to gel could this be the week? Luiz Diaz started and looked really good against Chelsea, he could once again terrorise the Bournemouth defenders. Alexander Arnold said they had no other hopes apart from becoming champions in his post match interview. If this is to be the case, they’ll need a convincing win against The Cherrys.
If I was a Bournemouth fan, I’d be worried. With the history, form and expected finish all looking good for Liverpool, it’s a game that haunts them. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stack up too well again this week. With an opening day draw at home against West Ham, it’s certainly not a bad start for the South Coasters. However you can’t see it stopping the Reds this weekend who might well run away big winners again.
Liverpool – 1.21
Score prediction – 5:0
Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United
Another Premier League classic. Two clubs who expect a lot and over the last few years haven’t delivered to those high standards and expectations. But it’s a new season. For both sets of fans the expectations have once again been reset. For United, on the surface, it’s been a good summer.
De Gea’s time has been up for a while and getting a keeper or suited to Ten Hags style will surely do them some good. Allowing Hag to fully implement his style and tactics will surely pay dividends as the season progresses. There’s no doubt he is a quality manager and given the support he needs this could be a good season for the Red Devils. Rashford and Fernandes are fit and ready, the addition of Mason Mount and a bolstered squad, things seem to be set for a good season on the red side of Manchester.
You never really know with Spurs. Even their first game was hard to gauge. Brentford looked good and although they controlled large portions of the game you can’t help but wonder if it was a chance missed, to set a precedent and show they are real top four contenders. There’s been massive changes.
With Ange Postecoglou arriving and bringing with him new ideas and hopefully fresh changes there’s a lot to be hopeful about. However, they have lost their talisman. I don’t think the role Harry Kane did at Tottenham can be underplayed. Captain, record goalscorer, numerous golden boots and goals. He’s almost irreplaceable. Although Maddison will now wear the 10 shirt, who will fill in the goals and assists left behind by their best ever player. Sorry Tottenham fans, that’s a tough read.
Manchester United – 2.17
Score prediction 1 – 3
