World Cup Final Preview
Well, it’s been a long tournament for both sides. Although England have tournament final experience after their Euro’s heroics; they still have demons to overcome with the World Cup. For ‘La Roja’ it’s different. Having previously only made it to the round of 16 this is by far the closest they’ve come, with England crashing out at the semi-final stages twice before. Who handles the pressure better could well decide this one.
Spain’s journey has been interesting to say the least. From backroom mutiny to a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Japan just a few games ago it has been a fairly rocky road for the Spanish. A pre-tournament bust up between players and coach Jorge Vilda left ‘La Roja’ in a bad place. However this doesn’t seem to have stopped them on the pitch. The Spanish will be relying on a few key players and as underdogs they’ll need a complete team performance with some individual brilliance to pull this off.
Alexia Putellas would normally pose the biggest threat for England. The 29-year-old Barcelona captain is one of Spain’s greats. Winning back-to-back Ballon d’Ors, seven league titles and two Champions League’s, she has proven herself on every stage except one. However she’s been recovering from injury and has only managed to start two of Spain’s games this tournament she’s a doubt to be at full fitness. The Spanish will be relying on the likes of Salma Paralluelo and Vilda to break down the English defence.
England, to be honest, haven’t been at their very best this tournament. Either way they find themselves in a final and a chance to hold both the Euros and World Cup at once. Sarina Wiegman’s side had to come through the hosts, Australia, and a ferocious Sydney crowd.
“It hasn’t been easy,” England’s Ella Toone said. “But we’ve grown and learned from every game and every challenge.”
There are a few issues England needs to overcome. Lauren James had been England’s best player before her ban. There are big questions over her involvement and whether she deserves to come straight back into the starting lineup. She has already shown her incredible attacking qualities in this tournament but she could well play a role as an impact sub.
England will be relying on the likes of Russo and Toone for a victory, with Lucy Bronze hoping to keep the potent Spanish attack out. This England team has experience in big matches; but there’s nothing quite like a World Cup final.
World Cup Final Odds
Spain go into this one as favourites by a hair. They sit at 2.58 with the England side at 2.77. It’s likely to be a cagey game, big finals tend to be, and over 2 goals sits at 1.80. The draw at full time sits at 2.85 which could well be the final outcome.
Alessia Russo is becoming an England hero. She is at 8.10 to open the scoring in the final. Esther Gonzalez has also been in great form and sits at 6.90 to score first. Both teams to score is currently at 1.95 which is very likely given the sides array of attacking talent.
World Cup Final Betting Tips
England to win 2-1 @ 9.80
It’s going to be a tight one either way. Finals rarely live up to the high expectations but these two sides have got so much attacking quality. There were goals in both semi-finals but the likelihood is there won’t be quite so many with everyone on edge. England could sneak a late winner just like in the Euros to bring it home.
Bet Builder: Under 3.5 goals & each team over 2.5 corners @ 4.10
This one covers both sides to get a goal and both teams to notch up two or three corners. Both sides have a plethora of attacking riches but it’s rare to see a goal fest in the final. Both teams are also happy to pull the trigger so expect a lot of goalkeeper and corner action.
