EFL Cup: Newcastle vs Man City Preview, Odds & Betting Tips

Manchester City travel to Tyneside this Wednesday for an EFL Cup humdinger. Newcastle were close to their first-ever League Cup last season but came up short in the final against Manchester United. For Manchester City it’s a chance to make it an incredible 5 from 7 in the League Cup and continue the domination in this competition; they’re favourites to go all the way. Can Newcastle stop them in their tracks?

Newcastle vs Man City Preview

This is a match that normally delivers. Even as the questionable oil money discourse swirls around the two clubs; it doesn’t seem to be stopping them from delivering on the pitch. For Manchester City, it is something they’re used to. They’ve played the bad guys before. But for plucky Newcastle, everyone’s favourite team from the North East, being the bullies is new to them.

However, they’re settling into the role well. An 8-0 pumping of Sheffield United is the latest statement, another power play. A few years ago they would have been battling away with clubs like Sheffield United. However, the money revolution is well underway for Newcastle and the club is playing Champions League football, beating Premier League outfits 8-0, and going toe to toe with the big boys. It can only be a matter of time before they land themselves some silverware.

Eddie Howe is thought to be the man to take them there. The Newcastle boss seems to have them all singing the same song and the football for the most part has been good. This side has gone from strength to strength. While their side is filled with quality in the likes of Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak; Howe also seems to be getting the best from players like Nick Pope and Dan Burn. Players who previously seemed to be at their level now find themselves at the San Siro. More so, they looks comfortable mixing it with the big clubs and don’t look out of place.

But, and this is the kicker, there is now expectation. With big money comes the assumption that as a club, they should be winning trophies. From fans to pundits, we expect Newcastle to pick something up in the next few years. If Eddie Howe doesn’t deliver I’m sure it could get nasty really quickly. Where is the ceiling for Howe and his players? Whether they can deliver on trophies is yet to be seen.

Now to the other fun-loving, money-bags club. Treble winners last year, dominant City roll on. Being used to their place atop the financial and footballing tree it just seems to continue for Manchester City. Erling Haaland’s scoring, Pep’s got them singing, and it’s all rather rosey as they continued their perfect start to the campaign this weekend with a 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

This juggernaut looks like one of the best outfits assembled in club history. That is no exaggeration as the treble winners look to add another League Cup to the collection. Pep seems to enjoy winning this one. They will line up ready knowing its another chance to consolidate themselves in the footballing hall of fame.

It promises to be a good one. Sometimes the League Cup can be underappreciated and not particularly glamorous. Teams use it as a chance to rotate and rest for the bigger competitions. However, I think both of these sides really want this. For Pep it’s another crown he can display and for Eddie Howe, it’s the first domestic silverware for the new regime and a statement of intent.

EFL Cup Football Betting Odds

As the home side, Newcastle comes into this one as a slight underdogs at 2.68. They will want to finally go all the way in this competition and are 11.00 to avenge last year’s final loss and lift the trophy. For Manchester City, they find themselves yet again looking to go all the way and maybe win a quadruple. They’re 2.38 to win this one and are 4.00 to take home another League Cup.

Obviously, Erling Haaland is the favourite to open the scoring at 4.30 followed by the Newcastle striker Isak; he’s 5.40 to break the deadlock in this one. Callum Wilson (5.40) and Julian Alvarez (7.40) follow after to grab the opener.

Newcastle vs Man City Betting Tips

Bet Builder: Manchester City to win, over 2.5 goals, and Haaland to score anytime @ 4.10

Manchester City have such squad depth that even if they rotate, they have world-class players all over the pitch and could just be too much for Newcastle. With two potent attacks, there are likely to be goals; and if there are goals it’s likely Haaland pops up with at least one.

Julian Alvarez to score first @ 7.80

He’s a world-class player who sometimes doesn’t get the chance to show just how good he is, being stuck behind Haaland scoring 35+. The World Cup winner normally takes his chances and it’s likely he’ll get a run out here at St James’ Park.
