Canelo Alvarez v Jermell Charlo Preview
Under the bright lights of the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, we have another huge rumble as these two fight it out for the undisputed super middleweight title. It doesn’t get much bigger than this in the fight game, under the bright, fluorescent lights of Sin City, with the undisputed belts on the line. Let’s get ready to rumble!
The two come into this one in good form. The last time Jermell Charlo was in the ring, back in May 2022, he beat Brian Castano to become the super welterweight champion. He’s unbeaten in his last five fights, since losing to Tony Harrison back in 2019. Charlo will also have the height and reach advantage in this one and is slightly longer than his opponent, something he will hope to use to his advantage. Keeping his distance will be key if he wants this fight to go the distance.
Alvarez comes into this one the more experienced fighter. He’s had a string of big victories, settling old scores with John Ryder and Gennady Golovkin. The 33-year-old is one of the best fighters to ever come out of Mexico and has been fighting in heavier weight classes than this one. Although he might be shorter with less reach, he’ll be robust and ready to get in close to Charlo, hoping to cause some damage. This is his third title defence so he knows how to keep the challengers in their place, something he’ll be hoping to do again.
The two line up hoping to keep their respected belts, knowing the winner takes all in this one. However, Alvarez will come into this one as favourite having fought in this and heavier weight categories. On the flip side, Charlo is coming up two weight categories for this fight. It’s yet to be seen whether he can take punishment from a fighter as big as Alvarez as he hasn’t made this jump before. Could this be a step too far?
Adding to this, with his experience and incredible fight IQ, Alvarez will look to get this fight stopped as soon as he can, knowing Charlo will be keeping his distance, using that longer reach of his, and trying to ensure it isn’t ended in the first three or four rounds. Either way, it’s lining up to a bombshell fight. These two top professionals go about their trade slightly differently. If Charlo gets caught early, it could spell trouble for the American; however, having jumped the weight categories, if he can pull this off, it would be a great feat.
Canelo Alvarez v Jermell Charlo Boxing Odds
Having made the jump to this weight, it’s no surprise that Jermell Charlo comes into this one as the underdog at 4.00. The American hasn’t fought this heavy and against a seasoned pro like Alvarez, it’s going to take some work to get the victory here. Alvarez arrives as the favorite and undisputed champion. He’s 1.22 to fight off Charlo and retain his title for the fourth time.
Alvarez is 3.40 to finish this bout with a knockout or TKO, which could well happen if he manages to get inside early and put a stop to this one in the early rounds. He’s 21.00 to finish this in the first three rounds.
For Charlo, he’s 6.00 to win by decision and 11.00 to finish this with a KO or a TKO.
Fight Night Betting Tips
Canelo Alvarez to win by KO, TKO or DQ @ 3.40
There’s a reason Alvarez is coming into this one as the favourite. The Mexican is an experienced boxer with great intelligence. He’s fought at much heavier weight categories than this and comes up against an opponent who is making a big leap up the weights. There’s a good chance he could end this one with a KO.
Canelo Alvarez to win in rounds 7-9 @ 8.50
As the rounds wind on and both fighters tire, this could be the chance for Alvarez to get inside and work on Charlo. The big American will be watchful in the early rounds, however, the longer it goes, the harder it’ll be to keep that defence up as the two boxers get more and more tired.
Jermell Charlo by Decision @ 6.00
He might be the underdog, but Charlo is a brilliant boxer. He didn’t get here by luck. He possesses great skill and boxing IQ. Although he’s not fought at this weight before, he has the reach and height on his opponent, so if he can keep his distance, he can work the jab using his longer reach and take this fight all the way. If he is to win this one, it’ll probably go the the judges.
