Manchester United vs Manchester City Preview
It’s the first Manchester Derby of the year as the treble winners travel across the city to Old Trafford. It’s the 191st meeting between the two sides and the first time this season they have crossed paths. Manchester City came out on top the last time these two met in the FA Cup final; the second trophy in their treble-winning season. Since then, United have been on the edge of turmoil more than once and City continue to march on, even if they haven’t been at their best.
The weekly Manchester United meltdown was once again postponed after a 2-1 win away at Sheffield United and a 1-0 home victory over Copenhagen. However, the Reds were far from convincing in either of those performances, despite managing to get the job done. For Erik ten Hag, this season has been on the brink of nightmarish. But, they have now won three games on the bounce. Normally, when teams play badly and still get the results, it’s a good sign, but the displays from this United side suggest the opposite.
On the other side of Manchester, City have also had (by their lofty standards) a slow start. They have continued to plow through the smaller clubs, however, poor results against Newcastle and Wolves have left some suggesting they aren’t quite the same side from last year. The loss of Rodri was massive for them. Results suggested maybe he has become their most important player. Unfortunately for United, he’s back.
For United, this will be by far their biggest test of the season, and having failed to beat Arsenal, Brighton, Tottenham, and both Galatasaray and Brighton at home; there isn’t much to suggest an upturn in fortune for the Red Devils. However, in the past couple of years, they have really turned up for this one.
They sit 8th in the table as things stand; results are a must. They are a side that has had success playing on the counter and if they can use the pace of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and new man Rasmus Hojlund, they could cause City some issues. They also do have hope as they won this match at home last season with a valiant display, proof they can do it.
But City have also handed out their fair share of maulings in this fixture. And there’s nothing like a derby day defeat to send the home fans in disarray. They have enjoyed playing at Old Trafford, and with United fans already in mutiny mode, if they go a goal down early on, things could get nasty very fast. The return of Rodri has boosted them massively and Erling Haaland has ended his brief goal drought. City will fancy themselves here.
It’s an interesting fixture and the first 20 minutes or so will be so crucial. If United can hang in there they have every chance, but if City get going early on, then this United side in its current iteration could fall apart, and fast.
Latest Manchester Derby Betting Odds
Manchester City, to nobody’s surprise, come into this one as the clear favourite. They sit second in the table and are 1.63 to win this one away from home. With United being so flakey, they find themselves as rank outsiders at 5.00 and the draw at 3.84.
City are 5.30 to grab more than three goals away from home and Erling Haaland is the favourite to score first in this one at 3.56. Marcus Rashford is tipped at 9.50 to score first and the favoured United player to do so. Their new striker Rasmus Hojlund is also 4.20 to score anytime for United.
Manchester United vs Manchester City Betting Tips
Bet Builder: Man City to win,Haaland to score anytime, and over 2.5 goals @ 2.75
Everything points to a Manchester City victory here. United have been winning games, but have ultimately been poor. The Sky Blues are so much better than United at the moment. Haaland normally gets buckets of chances in this side and being a striker of his quality, he’s likely to grab at least one.
Bet Builder: Man City to win, both teams to score, and over 3.5 goals @ 4.10
If Manchester City assert dominance early, then things could get very, very nasty for the Reds. United have struggled massively against top opposition and it doesn’t get much tougher than City.
Manchester City over 3 goals @ 5.30
City just coming into form, United on the ropes, this has all the hallmarks of a mauling. If City get a couple of goals early it could get really ugly for the home side.
