Liverpool vs Manchester United Preview
United in Turmoil
At certain points, you could be forgiven for feeling a little bad for Manchester United. The perpetual meltdown that comes from both poor performances on the pitch and the intense media spotlight, a continued post-mortem that seeks to examine and highlight just how far United have fallen since the days of glory under Sir Alex Ferguson.
The best course of action seems a reset. Forget what came before and accept where you are. It’s not the same beast it once was, they can’t hold themselves to that standard. Manchester United arrive at Anfield off the back of a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, as well as whimpering out of the Champions League with a 1-goal loss to Bayern Munich; and if that wasn’t enough, they got tumped by seven in this fixture last year. It’s a foreboding scene.
Liverpool on the Charge
Given Liverpool’s three-game winning streak in the Premier League, a home win should be considered. To compound things, midfielder Bruno Fernandes is sidelined due to suspension, while Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and Lisandro Martinez remain in the recovery room. This game comes too early for Mason Mount, but Marcus Rashford is fully fit, and despite poor form, could be back in the side.
But there are two teams in this battle, and it hasn’t been the smoothest sailing for Liverpool after all. Although they are on a winning streak, there have been elements of luck surrounding their latest wins.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s side are on an 11-match winning streak at home in all competitions. They have managed to score three or more goals in each of their last five games on home turf. The most recent of those impressive displays was against Fulham, where they netted four goals.
Manchester United’s display against Bayern seemed more like damage limitation rather than pro-active football. It’s likely Erik ten Hag will employ similar tactics here against the league leaders away from home. But could this be perilous? If Liverpool score early then it could get nasty. But you just never know what the United side will turn up. There is always the possibility of a shock with the quality they have.
Liverpool vs Manchester United Betting Odds
It’s a big one, this. Two giants of English football both making their stake to be historically, the most successful. But on Sunday, Manchester United arrive as massive underdogs given their recent form and Liverpool’s title charge. Liverpool are 1.30 to win this with United at a massive 7.90. The draw is at 5.80.
The goalscorer odds are also unsurprising given recent form, with Mo Salah leading the way at 4.33 and Darwin Nunez at 4.80 to net first. The top-ranked United player is Rasmus Hojlund at a long 10.00 to grab the first goal.
Liverpool vs Manchester United Betting Tips
Liverpool to win, one team to score, and over 2.5 goals @ 4.50
After the meek midweek performance against Bayern and a massive list of injuries, there isn’t much hope for this United side coming into this one. They have been poor both going forward and defensively, and Anfield is the toughest place to go in the league.
Mo Salah to score first @ 4.33
Salah loves a goal against United and the Reds’ star will be eyeing up another few goals here against a struggling United defence.
