5. Liverpool 2-2 Man City (2012) – Carling Cup Classic
This cracker took place a decade ago, before the arrival of Jurgen Klopp and just as Man City were entering their ascendancy under Roberto Mancini.
The Carling Cup is surely the only true name for this competition – the name alone oozes nostalgia. Not to mention the likes of Charlie Adam, Craig Bellamy and Gareth Barry taking you on a trip down memory lane.

4. Liverpool 4-3 Man City (2018) – Centurions Lose
This is a classic because it highlighted the incredible work Klopp was doing with Liverpool.
In a back-and-forth first half typical of this fixture, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Leroy Sane found the net. But Liverpool came out all guns blazing in the second half.
They harassed City’s back four with brutal intensity, and their famous front three – Firmino, Mane and Salah – all helped themselves to a goal as they raced into a 4-1 lead.
City showed signs of a late comeback through Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan, but it was too little too late.
Ultimately, the result was of minor significance as City went on to become the Centurions, winning the league title with 100 points.
However, Liverpool had created a blueprint on how to cause City problems.
3. Man City 2-1 Liverpool (2019) – Early Title Decider
Potentially the earliest title decider the Premier League had ever seen, but a title decider it ended up being, nonetheless.
The Etihad played host to another smashing game between these sides on 3rd January 2019. In a typically hard-fought affair, goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane helped City to a 2-1 win.
City went on to claim a second successive Premier League title for the first time in their history with 98 points.
Incredibly, Liverpool finished just a point shy of their rivals’ total, just missing out on one of the tightest and most entertaining Premier League campaigns to date.
2. Man City 2-2 Liverpool (1996) – Precious Time Wasted
Undoubtedly one of the most memorable top-flight matches of all time, this game descended into complete chaos due to some rogue information shifting hands.
On the last day of the 1995/96 season, City needed three points to give themselves a chance of Premier League survival. When they went into the half-time break 2-0 down, all hope appeared lost.
In one of the most bizarre second halves in football history, City managed to wrestle back the initiative with two goals, keeping their survival dreams alive.
When City received the information that a late Wimbledon goal had gone in and a point would be enough to guarantee relegation avoidance, they took the ball to the corner flag to waste time.
But when Niall Quinn came charging out of the changing rooms, panic set in. They had received false information. City needed another goal, but it was too late – they were relegated.
1. Liverpool 3-2 Man City (2014) – This Does Not Slip
Steven Gerrard had a wonderful playing career, but unfortunately for the former Liverpool captain, this moment might be the one he is remembered for.
After goals from Raheem Sterling, Martin Skrtel and Philippe Coutinho gave the Reds a 3-2 win over City, Liverpool were on track to win their first ever Premier League title.
With tears in his eyes, Gerrard gave an iconic speech to his Liverpool huddle: ‘This does not f****** slip now. We go again’.
Just two games later in a moment of horrendous irony, Gerrard’s slip gifted the ball to Demba Ba, who raced away to give Chelsea the lead in a match the Blues went on to win 2-0.
Liverpool lost the title to City by just two points.
