England vs Belgium Preview
England were largely outplayed on home soil against Brazil, with a lacklustre performance resulting in a 1-0 defeat.
The loss has raised further questions about Gareth Southgate’s ability against top 10 ranked nations. Questioning could intensify on Tuesday as England take on fourth-ranked Belgium.
Not only was the defeat a first in 10 games following the World Cup exit in Qatar, but it was also England’s first loss at home since that embarrassing 4-0 defeat against Hungary in 2022.
Unfortunately for Southgate, Tuesday’s game will be no walk in the park either.
Belgium are undefeated post-World Cup following the appointment of head coach Tedesco. He has led the Red Devils to eight wins and three draws in his first year in charge.
Their first friendly of the break was a 0-0 draw in Dublin. They survived an early missed penalty courtesy of Brighton’s Evan Ferguson but failed to convert their 64% possession into clear-cut chances.
Belgium have typically been a bogey team for England since the turn of the millennium. England have enjoyed two victories in the five games, a 1-0 win in an international friendly in 2012 and a 2-1 victory in the Nations League in 2020.
When it has really mattered, the Belgians have come out on top. They were 1-0 winners in the 2018 World Cup group stage and then went on to beat England 2-0 in the third-place play-off in the same competition.
Latest Football Betting Odds
Despite a poor performance on Saturday night, England remain 1.69 favourites for Tuesday night’s clash. Belgium arrive as 4.40 underdogs following their draw in Ireland, with the tie priced at 3.53.
While both teams to score has been heavily backed and is priced at 1.89, either side to keep a clean sheet is also attracting attention at 1.81. Over 1.5 goals (1.31) and over 2 goals (1.48) are heavily favoured also.
Ollie Watkins led the line for England last time out but we could see Southgate turn to Ivan Toney for the coming game. Both are priced at 5.60 to open the scoring.
Romelu Lukaku didn’t feature in Dublin but is Belgium’s favourite to break the deadlock at 7.10.
England vs Belgium Betting Tips
Under 2.5 goals – 1.76
There’s a good chance we see another cagey affair. Four of England’s last five matches have seen under 2.5 goals, as well as three of Belgium’s previous four.
Bet Builder: England to win, both teams to score and Ivan Toney to score first – 13.00
Toney could get the nod ahead of Watkins as Southgate continues to analyse his attacking options ahead of Euro 2024. If a goal goes in early, we could see a much more open game. Both nations have plenty of attacking talent capable of making this an end-to-end cracker.
