The format

The 20 teams are split into four groups of five, with the top two in each section progressing to the Super 8 stage and making up two more groups. The top two in this pair of groups will qualify for the semi-finals.

The groups

Group A: Pakistan, India, Canada, Ireland, United States

Group B: England, Australia, Namibia, Scotland, Oman

Group C: New Zealand, West Indies, Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea, Uganda

Group D: South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal Netherlands

The favourites

*Odds are subject to change.

India, fuelled by their talent from the IPL, are the favourites to win the T20 World Cup for the first time since the inaugural edition in 2007. Rohit Sharma’s side are 2.20 to reach the final, although the likes of England, Australia and South Africa pose serious threats. A strong South Africa squad, captained by fearsome batter Aiden Markram, is priced at 4.00 to take part in the tournament’s finale.

Dark horses

With the majority of the tournament being played on home soil, the West Indies look a great bet. Boasting superstar players in the form of Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Shai Hope and skipper Rovman Powell, the Caribbean side are an eye-catching 5.00 to reach the final. Perhaps more surprisingly is Afghanistan being priced at 15.00, because they possess elite spin-bowling options in Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Noor Ahmad and all-rounder Mohammad Nabi.

T20 World Cup betting tips

Top England batter: Will Jacks @ 5.00

After a successful IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the stage is set for Will Jacks to cement his status as a mainstay in England’s one-day sides. The 25-year-old can clear the boundary with ease and if he arrives at the crease in his usual No3 spot, he should see plenty of time on the pitch to rack up the runs.

Top Indian bowler: Kuldeep Yadav @ 7.00

No, not the great fast-bowling machine that is Jasprit Bumrah. Instead, we’ve opted for India’s world-class spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, who should have a field day on tracks baked by the heat and assisting the turning ball. The 29-year-old has taken 57 wickets in T20Is at a ridiculous average of 14.10.

Top Australian batter: Marcus Stoinis @ 9.00

While the likes of Travis Head, David Warner and Mitchell Marsh are regularly heralded for their destructive ability with the bat, Marcus Stoinis is perhaps a man who should be feared above them all. The Aussie all-rounder lit up the recent edition of the IPL with Lucknow Supergiants, where he often batted at No3. Likely to come in at No4 or No5 for his country, Stoinis has the experience and talent to score runs aplenty.
