Euro 2024: Germany vs Scotland Preview, Tips, Odds & More

Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan

Tomorrow, Euro 2024 kicks off and we are in for a month of footballing drama in venues all across Germany. As is tradition, the host nation will commence proceedings on the tournament’s opening night, with Julian Nagelsmann’s star-studded side facing a potentially tricky outing against Scotland.

Steve Clarke’s Scots cruised through qualifying, memorably defeating Spain on home soil to claim one of their five victories in Group A and while their squad is perhaps not at full strength this summer due to injuries, they should be no pushovers.

However, the likes of Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Ilkay Gundogan and Kai Havertz will likely prove to be too hot to handle in the end for the underdogs – and for most teams at the tournament.

Preview

Germany will be desperate to get their campaign off to a winning start after their failures in previous tournaments. Die Mannschaft exited at the group stage of the 2022 World Cup and were dumped out of Euro 2020 by fierce rivals England in the last 16. With tricky tests against Hungary and Switzerland to come after, Nagelsmann’s side cannot afford to slip up on the opening night.

As for Scotland, the Euro 2024 opener represents something close to a free hit. Clarke’s men failed to win any of their matches at Euro 2020, drawing 0-0 with England either side of demoralising defeats to Croatia and the Czech Republic. But with more experience now under their belts, the Scots will be aiming for a spot in the knockout stage.

Scotland have not beaten Germany since the turn of the millennium, achieving one draw and tasting defeat on three occasions. And Die Mannschaft go into the fixture with three wins in their last four, including an impressive 2-0 triumph over France back in March. In stark contrast, the Tartan Army have won just one of their last nine and that was a victory over minnows Gibraltar.

Germany vs Scotland Odds

*Odds are subject to change

It will come as no shock to learn that Germany are heavy favourites to beat the Scots on Friday evening. Die Mannschaft are 1.29 to claim victory in Munich, while Scotland are priced at 10.00 to secure three unlikely points.

Germany vs Scotland Betting Tips

Gundo Goal

Germany captain Gundogan is likely to occupy a more advanced midfield role against Scotland due to Leroy Sane’s lack of match fitness through injury. This makes the Barcelona maestro even more of a goal threat and the 33-year-old is also his country’s designated penalty taker. Gundogan to score anytime is 3.10.

Fast Start

With so much attacking talent at their disposal and the added adrenaline rush of playing in front of a home crowd, Germany may very well get off to a fast start at the Allianz. Nagelsmann’s side are priced at 3.25 to score over 1.5 goals in the first half and are 2.25 to finish the match with over 2.5 goals scored.

Scottish Consolation

But while we expect Germany to win, a Scotland goal on the night would be anything but a surprise. Die Mannschaft have not been convincing from a defensive standpoint over the past 12 months, even with the influence of arguably the world’s best centre-back in Antonio Ruidger. The Germans have kept only two clean sheets in their last 14 outings, a concerning record. As such, a victory over Scotland but both teams to score at 3.16 looks very tempting indeed.

Score Prediction

Scotland may even level the game after falling behind, but Germany should eventually get the job done in front of their fans.

Germany 3-1 Scotland
