History of Glorious Goodwood
The Goodwood Racecourse is owned by the Duke of Richmond and it has been hosting races since way back in 1802.
A perfect blend of tradition and modernity, the festival has grown in prestige and popularity in recent years and is now held in the highest of regards.
Some of the biggest races to enjoy during the festival are the Sussex Stakes, Goodwood Cup, and Nassau Stakes, although every race on show is exciting if you love your horses.
Each race at this event has its own rich history and attracts top-class horses, jockeys, and trainers.
Key Races and Betting Tips
*Odds are subject to change
Sussex Stakes – Wednesday, July 31 (15:35)
The Sussex Stakes is a one-mile race for three-year-olds and upwards. It is one of the festival’s most anticipated races, often pitting the best against each other.
Previous Winners: Notable past winners include Frankel, Mohaather, and Alcohol Free.
Betting Tips: Pre-race favourite Rosallion will not take part due to a respiratory illness, which makes this year’s edition an incredibly open field. Maljoom is certainly a horse to keep an eye on.
Goodwood Cup (Group 1) – Tuesday, July 30 (15:35)
This two-mile race is a real test of stamina and is best suited to horses with proven endurance.
Previous Winners: Stradivarius, who dominated this race with four consecutive wins, remains a standout Goodwood Cup name.
Betting Tips: Kyprios is the big favourite here at 1.50, but do not rule out an upset victory for Sweet William, who is priced at an eye-catching 6.50.
Nassau Stakes (Group 1) – Thursday, August 1 (15:35)
The Nassau Stakes is race run over one mile and one furlong. It is exclusively for fillies and mares aged three and up.
Previous Winners: Recent winners include high-profile names in the form of Fancy Blue and Lady Bowthorpe.
Betting Tips: This is set to be one of the most competitive races of this festival, with Opera Singer an early favourite for victory. However, Emily Upjohn may provide stiff competition.
King George Stakes (Group 2) – Friday, August 2 (15:00)
This is a five-furlong sprint, so it attracts some of the fastest horses on the planet.
Previous Winners: Battaash, a notable sprinter and champion horse, previously won this race four times in a row.
Betting Tips: It is hard to pick a winner in this one with so many good horses set to compete. However, Starlust at 6.50 has piqued our interest. Asfoora is the favourite at 4.00, with Big Evs (4.50) and Believing (5.00) among the early contenders.
Stewards’ Cup – Saturday, August 3 (15:35)
A heritage handicap run over six furlongs, this race is a test of both speed and tactical skill.
Previous Winners: The race is renowned for producing shocks and surprises, which makes it hard to predict a winner.
Betting Tips: However, we like the look of Purosangue in this year’s race at 9.00, who is just behind current favourite Albasheer (8.00).
