France vs Spain Preview

After winning their group convincingly with two 3-0 wins and a 1-0 victory, hosts France were flying high heading into the knockout stages of the competition. With arguably the strongest squad in the tournament, they were many people’s favourites for the gold medal and initially proved why.

A heated quarter-final contest against Argentina brought them back down to earth somewhat as they were challenged for 90 minutes, narrowly scraping with a 1-0 win in what was an extremely fiery affair. They showed their resilience once again in the semi-finals, coming from a goal down to beat Egypt 3-1.

New Bayern Munich signing Michael Olise has been the star of the competition so far and France will be relying on his flair to open up the Spanish defence on Friday. His former Crystal Palace teammate Jean-Philippe Mateta will be hoping to get in on the action as well, being the main focus of the French offence this year in their home Olympics.

Spain eased past Uzbekistan and the Dominican Republic in the group stage but were beaten 2-1 by Egypt in their final match. Waiting for them in the quarter-finals were Japan, who posed little threat and were brushed aside 3-0. The semis, however, were not so easy.

La Roja saw themselves a goal down to Morocco, but fought back to win 2-1. Like France, Spain also possess a squad full of European starlets who are ready to perform on the biggest stage, as they have done for their clubs.

Focus will be on creative midfielders like Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez and Villarreal’s Alejandro Baena, who will look to support striker Abel Ruiz. The talent in both sides is staggering and it is truly what the Olympics is all about. The final is shaping up to be thoroughly entertaining.
