Olympics: Men’s 400m Final Preview

Later this evening, British star Matt Hudson-Smith will compete for a gold medal in the final of the men’s 400m dash at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The 29-year-old will look to emulate fellow Brit Keely Hodgkinson and her incredible success in the women’s 800 final on Monday, as she claimed the event’s ultimate prize with the eyes of the sporting world watching.

Can Hudson-Smith do the business as the big favourite to earn yet another Olympic medal for Team GB? NetBet has previewed the race and you can head to our website for all the latest odds on the athletics.

Men’s 400m Final Preview

Hudson-Smith is out to avenge his disappointment at the 2016 Rio Olympics, when he finished eighth in the final with a time of 44.61 seconds.

The British star was forced to withdraw from Tokyo 2020 on medical grounds but he is now back, running brilliantly and looking more than ready to challenge for that coveted gold.

Hudson-Smith cruised through his semi-final race with an impressive time of 44.07 seconds, a far better effort than his final run in Rio.

But the 29-year-old will certainly face stiff competition in the Paris final, which is to be expected.

Quincy Hall and Kirani James are world-class talents in this event and you would not be surprised if either of them claimed the gold later this evening.

If Hudson-Smith wants to make sure of victory, he will have to run something close to his personal best time of 43.74 seconds – which is both a British and European record.

Over to you, Matt…

What Are the 400m Records?

The world and Olympic records in the 400m dash are the same and both held by South African sensation Wayde van Niekerk.

He achieved a staggering time of 43.03 at Rio 2016, beating the previous world record of 43.18 set by track and field legend Michael Johnson in 1999.

We cannot see Van Niekerk’s time being equalled or surpassed in the Stade de France, but never say never…
