Arsenal vs Wolves Preview
Arsenal are finally looking to end Manchester City’s Premier League dominance by winning their first league title for 21 years, and that quest begins with a home fixture against Wolves.
Mikel Arteta’s side enjoyed a strong pre-season campaign, which included convincing wins against Bayer Leverkusen (4-1) and Lyon (2-0).
The Gunners have only strengthened their squad over the summer with the permanent signings of goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford and defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, who really impressed at Euro 2024 with Italy.
With competition for places in the Arsenal defence very strong, it is likely that Calafiori will have to be patient before making his first Premier League start. This is despite an injury to Takehiro Tomiyasu, who is Arsenal’s only real injury concern ahead of this match.
Meanwhile, Wolves’ preparation for the new season has been mixed, with a notable 3-0 win against RB Leipzig coupled with a surprising 1-0 defeat against Rayo Vallecano. They have also had to cope with the departure of two key players in Max Kilman and Pedro Neto, who have moved to West Ham and Chelsea respectively.
Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has made a few additions of his own over the summer, though, including the permanent transfer of Manchester City youth product Tommy Doyle, who was on loan at the club last season.
The Wanderers have also added Brazilian teenage right-back Pedro Lima and Portuguese winger Rodrigo Gomes to their ranks, two players could make their English top-flight debuts on Saturday.
But with Arsenal having home advantage, it is difficult to see Wolves picking up any points from the Emirates Stadium. However, O’Neil’s side will still be keen to prove that they can compete against the Premier League’s finest despite the loss of two of their best players.
