History of the York Ebor Festival
The York Ebor Festival has its origins in 1843 when the first Ebor Handicap was introduced, named after York’s Roman name, Eboracum. York Racecourse itself, however, has a far older history, with races documented as early as 1709 – which is quite remarkable really.
The Ebor Festival grew steadily in popularity throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, eventually evolving into a prestigious meeting in British flat racing and indeed the whole British sporting calendar.
The festival’s long-standing tradition and connection to York’s history help make it a real highlight of the racing calendar, with significant races being added over the decades to help solidify its importance in the sport of horse racing.
