The England men’s cricket summer finishes with a one-day bonanza against the old enemy, Australia.
It promises to be a hugely entertaining white-ball series in which we see some new faces in action, particularly when it comes to the hosts. Of course, a lot of the superstars will also be on show.
England and Australia will compete in three T20Is before locking horns in five ODIs – which will be the start of their build up for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
And this will be the first examination of England’s interim white-ball coach Marcus Trescothick, with Test coach Brendon McCullum confirmed to be taking control of both roles early next year.

Reaction: A lot of new faces on show, with the likes of Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali missing out. Joe Root is said to have a future in the ODI squad and is simply absent due to Test commitments. Brook’s omission from the T20 squad is no doubt due to management of his workload, as is also the case with the absent Gus Atkinson. Buttler will miss the T20s through injury and is also a doubt for the ODIs. But overall, two solid and fresh-looking squads.

Reaction: Test skipper and world-class fast bowler Pat Cummins has been rested over burnout fears, while opening batter David Warner has retired from international cricket. But both squads still look incredibly powerful, particularly with the addition of exciting batter Fraser-McGurk to both rosters. Although, the Aussies have reserved some of their biggest stars like Smith, Maxwell and Starc for the ODIs only, clearly with one eye on next year’s Champions Trophy.
England vs Australia Preview
From a T20 perspective, both of these sides failed in their missions to win the recent T20 World Cup in the United States of America and the West Indies.
Australia did not even qualify for the semi-finals, while England were eliminated at that exact stage by eventual winners India.
But while England progressed further, it was the Aussies who achieved bragging rights when the two sides collided at the tournament as they claimed a deserved 36-run victory in the group stage.
Australia go into these T20 encounters straight after a three-match series against Scotland, which they won 3-0.
However, while things are a little closer in the T20 arena, in ODIs it is Australia who are now the stronger side after the end of England’s successful era under Eoin Morgan.
The Aussies are the reigning 50-over World Cup champions, having defeated India in their own backyard in last year’s final to claim the trophy for a record-extending sixth time.
Australia beat West Indies 3-0 in an ODI series earlier in 2024, while they triumphed over England by the same scoreline on home soil in late 2022.
In contrast, England’s last ODI series saw them lose 2-1 in the West Indies, although they have at least won their last two home series’ against New Zealand and the Republic of Ireland.
England will be desperate for a repeat of the 2018 white-ball series, when they beat Australia in a one-off T20 before claiming a famous 5-0 win in the ODIs.
But that is very, very unlikely…
