Tottenham vs Arsenal: Preview, Odds, Tips & More

Tottenham host their fierce rivals Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this Sunday in a match that brings North London to a standstill.

Arsenal produced a memorable 3-2 win in this fixture last season during their promising, but eventually ill-fated, title run-in, so will have a certain level of confidence when approaching the challenge again.

Spurs will, of course, be looking to rectify this and will be keen to put on a positive display for their home support, despite a poor recent record against the Gunners.

Tottenham vs Arsenal Preview

Spurs have had a mixed start to this season. It began with a disappointing 1-1 draw away at Leicester City in a game they most probably should have won, before they did notch a first win against a lacklustre Everton. However, they entered the international break on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park – a ground where they have notoriously underperformed in recent years.

Their form this season is pretty much in keeping with how last season ended, with the feeling of one step forward, two steps back lingering amongst fans and pundits alike. Spurs have won just three of their last 10 Premier League games, however, any negative energy can be assuaged with a derby win, which would uplift mood, at least temporarily, ahead of the rest of the season.

And this might be a good time to play Arsenal, with the controversial and much-debated red card shown to Declan Rice in their 1-1 draw at home to Brighton earning him a suspension for this huge game. They are also without summer signing Mikel Merino, as he recovers from a fractured shoulder suffered during his first training session with his new club. While Arsenal’s other permanent new signing Riccardo Calafiori suffered an injury on international duty with Italy this week and is a doubt. The Gunners will be able to call upon deadline day loan signing Raheem Sterling, though, with the winger set to be involved in an Arsenal squad for the first time.

But perhaps the biggest story going into the match is the unfortunate ankle injury suffered by skipper Martin Odegaard, who is such an influential figure. Can Mikel Arteta’s side cope without their creator-in-chief after he hobbled off in a Norway jersey? It certainly will not be easy in a hostile atmosphere.

The draw with Brighton is the only blemish on Arsenal’s record so far, having recorded back-to-back 2-0 wins in their opening fixtures against Wolves and Aston Villa. Fans will be hoping for another season of improvement under Arteta and the dream of beating Manchester City to the title finally being realised.

Spurs have just one win against Arsenal in the last five outings and that was back in May 2022. Meanwhile, the Gunners have secured victories in their last two visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – and will be looking to extend that run to three.
