Boxing: Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois Preview

Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois Preview

It is potentially another British boxing classic as Anthony Joshua faces Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium for the IBF World Heavyweight title.

The two will meet professionally for the first time this weekend, but sparring sessions in the mid-2010s apparently saw Dubois get the better of Joshua, with a big left hook leaving the former heavyweight champion very uncomfortable.

But under the bright lights of Wembley and the gaze of thousands of spectators, the conditions will be completely different.

Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois Preview

The stage is set for one of the biggest fights in British boxing history and there is so much at stake. Aside from the obvious British boxing bragging rights, there is the small matter of the IBF Heavyweight strap that is currently held by Dubois.

Joshua, 34, is much more experienced when it comes to world title fights and, indeed, fights at Wembley, having won all four of his events hosted there.

But he has had to deal with the fact that his stock has fallen in recent years since defeats by Andy Ruiz Jr (2019) and Oleksandr Usyk (2021, 2022). Despite those setbacks, he has managed to maintain a position where he is part of yet another world title fight.

He has done this by putting together a four-fight win streak that has seen him defeat Jermaine Franklin Jr (UD), Robert Helenius (KO), Otto Wallin (RTD) and former UFC fighter, Francis Ngannou (KO).

And it was the devastating way in which he dealt with Ngannou that really got people believing in AJ again. Now approaching the twilight of his fantastic career, fans of Joshua will be hoping he still has a couple of iconic moments to add to his story.

But 27-year-old Dubois will definitely feel like it is now his time to shine in the British boxing spotlight. After also becoming another victim of Usyk in 2023, Dubois has since recovered with back-to-back wins by TKO against Jarrell Miller and then Filip Hrgovic, setting up this heavyweight clash.

It is a cliche of the heavyweight division, but all it takes is one punch to decide a contest like this and Dubois has been given credit by previous opponents for having the biggest punching power they have ever felt.

It will be interesting to see which athlete can gain control of both the pace of the fight and the centre of the ring, knowing that any lapse in concentration could see their night end early.
