Southampton make the short trip to Bournemouth with a severe case of ‘what could have been’.
Russell Martin’s Saints came agonisingly close to a first Premier League victory of the season against Ipswich last weekend, only to see a Sam Morsy strike in the fifth minute of stoppage time salvage a 1-1 draw for the Tractor Boys.
But the overall performance should at least give Southampton some confidence heading into Monday night’s game, especially as it has been a tough couple of weeks for Bournemouth.
The Cherries were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea on home soil before suffering a 3-0 defeat at Liverpool last time out.
However, there can be no denying that Bournemouth are the superior outfit on paper. Antoine Semenyo has enjoyed a superb start to the campaign, while manager Andoni Iraola continues to implement his exciting philosophy.
Southampton may have to take less risks playing out from the back in order to achieve a positive result, although Martin and his players are unlikely to go down that route – and it may prove fatal in the end.
But at least it means goals are pretty much guaranteed at the Vitality Stadium and the destination of the three points should hinge on which attack delivers the goods on the night.
Semenyo, Evanilson, Justin Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier have the tools to inflict yet more misery on Southampton and push them closer to relegation.
