Australian Open: Women’s Preview

The Rod Laver Arena will play host as the biggest names in the sport compete for one of its biggest prizes. On the women’s side of the draw, the competition is as fierce as ever and even top contenders will need to be at their best if they want to be in with a shout of victory.

Understandably, the first name on everyone’s lips is the formidable Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian athlete has been tearing through the women’s bracket at Grand Slams and few have been able to stop her from adding to her trophy collection, which is already vast at the age of just 26. Her victory in the preparatory tournament in Brisbane this week only confirms that her form after winning the US Open is strong as ever – and she is to be considered among the very best in the world.

Another name to keep your eye on is that of young American Coco Gauff. After an impressive win over Iga Swiatek in the process of guiding the USA to their second United Cup, Gauff’s confidence will be at an all-time high. With consistency placed up there with the top players, she will be desperate to add to her US Open win from 2023, as the world No3 aims to emulate her hero, Serena Williams. Under new coaching staff, Gauff may have what it takes to make her mark in 2025.

Perhaps an outside shout, but a very relevant one, is 17-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva. The world No15 already has a maiden WTA title under her belt, won in Romania back in July. This was in a year where she showed complete fearlessness and lack of intimidation, proving to the world her threat on all surfaces. In addition to being coached by tennis legend Conchita Martinez, Andreeva defeated Sabalenka at Roland Garros last year. So despite her age, she is definitely a contender.

Australian Open: Men’s Odds

The favourite on the men’s side of the draw is, of course, Jannik Sinner. An incredible season in 2024 showed the world exactly what he is capable of, taking on all comers on his way to a Grand Slam double, as well as a Davis Cup victory for Italy. In 2024, he had a win percentage of 93%, higher than the most successful seasons registered by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Sinner will be eager to defend his crown in Melbourne – and we are not the only ones backing him to do exactly that!

Also in the mix are Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic. All three have proven pedigree and will not submit to Sinner’s dominance. There will be a target on the Italian’s back and this trio will be aiming straight at it. Alcaraz is world No3 and capable of beating anyone on his day – and the same can be said for Medvedev, at world No5.

Little justification is needed for mentioning serial Grand Slam winner Djokovic. World No2 Alexander Zverev is also worth noting, though recent complaints over elbow and bicep issues may dent his chances this time around.

Great Britain’s Jack Draper is our outside pick. Reaching the semi-finals at last year’s US Open and seemingly on an upward trajectory, there is no reason why 2025 cannot be an extremely successful year for the Englishman, whose momentum has been arrested only by injury. If his fitness is in order, he could surprise many tennis fans.

Australian Open: Men’s Odds

Jannik Sinner – 2.38

Carlos Alcaraz – 4.50

Novak Djokovic – 4.50

Alexander Zverev – 11.00

Daniil Medvedev – 15.00

Taylor Fritz – 29.00

Stefanos Tsitsipas – 29.00

Jack Draper – 61.00*
