The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events of the year and the pinnacle of the NFL calendar.
It is an American football match which pits the two Conference champions (American Football Championship and National Football Championship) against each other.
The winner receives the prestigious Vince Lombardi Trophy and the famous fixture was first played in its current form way back in 1967.
So, with Super Bowl LIX (59) nearly upon us, which sees the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs, NetBet takes a look at five of the most impressive records set in the NFL’s annual championship game.
NetBet, a trusted UK betting site, is the place to be for betting on this year’s Super Bowl, with a plethora of NFL odds and markets – including in-play betting!
Let’s begin…
Most Super Bowl Wins – Tom Brady (7)
It feels only right to start with arguably the greatest American football player of all time and the undisputed king of the Super Bowl.
Legendary quarterback Brady won the fixture six times during his famous stint with the New England Patriots.
Then in the 2020-21 season, the California native further enhanced his already glowing status in the sporting world by winning the Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the age of 43.
Brady is also the only player to win the Super Bowl in three different decades (2000s, 2010s and 2020s), further highlighting his incredible longevity.
Most Super Bowl MVP Awards – Tom Brady (5)
It is him again!
Brady’s career was defined by his ability to impact big games – and American football games do not come any bigger than the Super Bowl.
The superstar quarterback was named MVP in five of his 10 appearances in the fixture (yes, he did suffer defeat on three occasions).
In the 2021 final with the Buccaneers, Brady even upstaged current NFL hero and Kansas City Chiefs talisman Patrick Mahomes.
Most Consecutive Super Bowl Appearances – Gale Gilbert (5)
But even Brady could not match this historic achievement by Gilbert and his record may never be broken.
Gilbert featured in four Super Bowls for the Buffalo Bills and one with the San Diego Chargers.
However, he never actually got his hands on the trophy, suffering five consecutive defeats.
Talk about unlucky…
Most Super Bowl Points Scored – Jerry Rice (48)
Regarded by most NFL fans as the greatest wide receiver in the league’s history, Rice certainly made an impact in the Super Bowl arena.
He lifted the trophy three times with the San Francisco 49ers and was named the MVP for his dazzling display against the Cincinnati Bengals in 1988.
Rice also featured in the 2003 Super Bowl with the Oakland Raiders, although could not guide his team to victory.
He finished with eight touchdowns in the Super Bowl, which is also a record.
Largest Super Bowl Comeback – New England Patriots (25 points, 2017)
We end with perhaps the most famous Super Bowl in history, which is aptly nicknamed ‘28-3’.
And that is because Bill Belichick’s side were 28-3 down to the Atlanta Falcons midway through the third quarter, but still managed to win the match.
A Brady-inspired Patriots side scored 25 unanswered points to tie up the match in the final few seconds of regular time.
It was then the first Super Bowl to be sent to ‘overtime’, a period in which the Patriots scored the decisive touchdown after winning the coin toss and wrote themselves into the NFL history books.
