Man City welcome Spurs to the Etihad on Saturday evening as they look to climb above Arsenal to the summit of the league table. Despite not having looked their best in in the opening month of action, Pep Guardiola’s side are still favourites to claim a third successive title – that’s probably the Erling Haaland effect. They face their toughest test of the season thus far as they look to rid the woes of previous meetings with Tottenham this weekend.
Antonio Conte’s side make the trip north in fine form themselves, having won four of their opening six games. They will take huge confidence from their impressive recent record in this fixture – they were victorious home and away last season – but this City side poses an entirely different threat. Spurs might have the joint second-best defensive record in the league, but that backline will no doubt be tested at the Etihad.
This is gearing up to be a battle of the centre forwards. Haaland has scored a quite ridiculous 10 league goals already for City, whilst Harry Kane has found the net five times himself. Given City haven’t been as utterly dominant as they were at times last season, you get the feeling Spurs could hurt them on the break, and Kane will be pivotal in feeding his wingers in transition.
There does seem to be an heir of inevitability about City and Haaland this season. The visitors might need to score twice to get anything from the game, and even then, it may not be enough. In spite of Spurs’ undefeated start to the campaign, they are given just a 13% chance of victory by NetBet’s win probability counter. City are huge favourites and are given a 69% likelihood of winning, with a draw at 18%.

It’s impossible to ignore how good Spurs’ recent record in this fixture is. When you factor in City looking exposed against Newcastle and seemingly a long way from their best against Aston Villa, you fancy there is something in this for Conte’s side. They will have to put in their best defensive performance of the season and ride their luck at times, but they are capable of hurting any team with that front three.
