What is F1?
F1 is the highest class of international auto racing for single-seater formula racing cars sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). The current top racer is Britain’s own Sir Lewis Hamilton, who is aiming to beat Michael Schumacher’s record for most drivers’ championships over the next few years. He won the 2020 Drivers’ Championship but lost out in 2021 to his closest competitor, Max Verstappen. Other leading contenders over the past two or three season have been Charles Leclerc, Spain’s Carlos Sainz, Mexico’s Sergio Perez and George Russell. With the 2021 season wide open, plenty of drivers can stake their claim to lift the title.
History of F1
F1 is a sport with a rich history. The origins of the original F1 date back to the 1920s and 1930 when the European Championships of Grand Prix motor racing were held. The term “formula” means the car has to meet a certain set of criteria to be put into that specific class of car. There are many different types of Formula racing that are still commonplace to this day. The first grand prix officially took place just after the Second World War in Turin in 1946. A year later, the world drivers’ championship became official before the first ever championship race took place at Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix, in 1950.
The first-ever winner of the drivers’ championship was Italy’s Giuseppe Farina, driving for the Alfa Romeo team. He won that year in a thrilling climax, edging out his teammate and Argentinian legend, Juan Manuel Fangio. Fangio then took the sport by storm as he won five drivers’ championship in the 1950s. In 1958, the first constructors’ championship (model of car) was won by Vanwall but an even bigger achievement was Britain’s Mike Hawthorn winning the drivers’ championship, becoming the first driver from the UK to lift the prestigious title. Sadly, Hawthorn was tragically killed the following year in a car accident but Hawthorn’s success meant the sport was entering an era of British dominance. John Surtees, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt and Hawthorn won 10 drivers’ championships between them from 1958 to 1977 and the driving skill of this sextet was fast becoming the envy of the motor racing world.
The late 1970s and early 1980s was also an era when some of the best drivers from outside Europe were lifting titles with regularity. Brazilian legend Nelson Piquet won four driver’s championship in the early part of the 80s before compatriot Ayrton Senna dominated at the latter end of the decade.
Tragically, Senna was killed in an accident during the 1993 San Marino Grand Prix and racing mourned a true sporting legend. However, Germany’s Michael Schumacher took Senna’s mantle and won an astonishing seven titles between 1994 and 2004. Since their halcyon days of the 1960s and 70s, success from British drivers became harder to come by. Only Nigel Mansell in 1992 and Damon Hill (son of Graham) in 1996 won world titles. However, Sir Lewis Hamilton has matched Schumacher’s record of seven world titles, bursting onto the scene with victory in 2008. Can he go past the German legend before he retires?
