Newcastle vs Liverpool Preview
This could prove an important early match-up in what is sure to be a top four race that goes down to the wire. Eddie Howe’s Newcastle thumped Aston Villa 5-1 in the opening weekend’s action but were pegged back by a well-oiled Man City machine on their trip to the Etihad. The Magpies have been a force to be reckoned with on home soil since the start of last season, although they have not beaten Liverpool in the north east since 2015.
Liverpool have had a solid start to their campaign. They snatched a hard-earned point at a bouncing Stamford Bridge on matchday 1, before surviving an early scare to brush Bournemouth aside last weekend. There is certainly work to be done on the red side of the Mersey, particularly defensively, but their attack is unbelievably stacked.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have had the better of recent meetings between these sides, winning four on the bounce. In fact, the Reds are unbeaten in 13 against Newcastle, winning nine and drawing four. They have also been victorious in four of their previous visits to St. James’, and have kept three consecutive clean sheets.
Looking at Liverpool’s defensive frailties, as well as both attacks on display, it doesn’t look likely that we’ll be seeing clean sheets. Newcastle run rampant against Villa, with Alexander Isak looking worth every penny Howe paid, while Liverpool’s attack looks back to its best, with Luis Diaz having found the net in back-to-back games to kick the season off.
Premier League Football Odds
It might surprise some to see that Newcastle are 2.10 favourites heading into the tie, while Liverpool are 3.03 underdogs. A draw is priced at a tempting 3.80. Goals have been heavily backed in the build up, with both teams to score (1.44), over 1.5 goals (1.15), over 2.5 goals (1.49), and over 3.5 goals (2.24) all attracting attention.
Callum Wilson (5.50), Alexander Isak (6.20), and Harvey Barnes (8.10) are leading the odds to open the scoring for Newcastle, while Mo Salah (6.80), Darwin Nunez (7.80), and Diogo Jota (8.80) are favourites to break the deadlock for the travelling team.
Premier League Betting Tips
Draw and both teams to score – 4.40
We think the odds are stacked too heavily in Newcastle’s favour. It’s always tough to bet against Liverpool, and given their recent record on this ground, we like the look of them to grab a point.
Bet Builder: BTTS, over 2.5 goals, Isak and Diaz to score at any time – 7.00
There’s got to be goals in this game: maybe a 2-1 either way or a 2-2 draw. Isak looked electric against Villa and is Howe’s biggest weapon. Diaz currently looks favourite to fire Liverpool to points.
