Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid Preview

Atletico have made a solid start to the season, as is to be expected under Diego Simeone, who has been in charge of the club since 2011 and will surpass 900 games as manager this term.

After a disappointing 2023-24 campaign, the team will be keen to recover the performance levels that saw them win La Liga as recently as 2021.

Even this season’s unbeaten start (four wins and three draws) has left fans a little bit underwhelmed based on the teams played, but a win over their city rivals can only put a positive spin on any early narrative.

Simeone still tries to base his teams on a solid defence, but has struggled to find a settled XI since key figures of yesteryear such as Diego Godin and Stefan Savic have moved on.

He has tried to counteract this by convincing strikers Julian Alvarez (who scored a dramatic late winner against Celta Vigo on Thursday) and Alexander Sorloth to join over the summer, hoping to make his team more potent in attack.

And speaking of potent attacks, Real Madrid might just boast the most dynamic in world football at present.

Of course, they completed the long-awaited signing of Kylian Mbappe, adding the clinical forward to the likes of Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo Goes, and Jude Bellingham, as the kings of Europe attempt to enter another Galactico era.

Sadly, Mbappe will miss the derby through injury, which is a bit of a headache for boss Carlo Ancelotti and means the Italian tactician will have to tweak his star-studded XI.

Having started the season with two draws in their first three games, Real have since hit five consecutive wins and do not look to be slowing down anytime soon. They come into this one off the back of a seemingly dramatic 3-2 home victory over Alaves, though they were cruising at 3-0 before conceding two late goals through a slight lack of concentration.

There will be no space for such things on Sunday, as more crucial points and bragging rights are up for grabs.
