Manchester City vs Tottenham Preview

The pick of the Premier League Matchday 12 fixtures can certainly be found at the Etihad Stadium, as reigning champions Manchester City meet Tottenham Hotspur.

With Liverpool having created a five-point lead over the Citizens in recent weeks, Pep Guardiola’s men will be desperate to end a run of four defeats in a row in all competitions that began against Spurs in the Carabao Cup at the end of last month.

Since that aforementioned victory, Tottenham have also beaten Aston Villa (4-1), but lost to Galatasaray (3-2) and Ipswich (1-2), continuing their inconsistent form that has characterised the club for too long. In this preview, we will assess who we think might come out on top in this intriguing match.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Preview

With the last international break of 2024 out of the way, all club teams and managers can concentrate on a crucial period where the games come thick, fast and uninterrupted. It is usually during these periods that City excel, putting together insurmountable winning runs that demoralise their competition. But things certainly are not rosy in the City garden at present.

Their last four games have resulted in a scarcely believable four defeats, the first time this has ever happened to City since Guardiola took charge, showing how exceptional their recent form has been.

The recent, major injury suffered by Rodri that will see him miss the remainder of the season has the potential to destabilise any team. But add to that the persistent concerns over the fitness of Kevin De Bruyne, John Stones, and other members of the defensive line, and the blue half of Manchester could have a real problem. The injury issues have led to 19-year-old centre back Jahmai Simpson-Pusey making his first senior appearances in three of the last four matches.

And Spurs are not the team that City would ideally want to see while on a run like this, as the North London side have managed to avoid defeat in half of the last 12 editions of this fixture, regularly being a thorn in their side.

But, as is often the case with Tottenham, their own inconsistency has already affected their chances of making the progress they are so desperate for. The fans have been left frustrated by the team’s capability to thrash a strong Villa team 4-1 one week, only to hand newly-promoted Ipswich their first Premier League win of the season the week after. So, wouldn’t it be typical of Tottenham to go to another extreme and beat City at the Etihad? Your guess is as good as ours!

Manchester City vs Tottenham Odds

Despite their recent form, City are clear favourites priced at 1.50. The draw is at 4.60, while an unlikely Tottenham win is at 5.50.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Betting Tips

Both Teams to Score – Yes @ 1.44

With City expected to dominate possession, forcing Spurs to lean into their counter-attacking threat, this seems like an obvious one.

Anytime Goalscorer – Heung Min Son @ 3.40

Son has eight goals against City, and irrespective of a recent dip in productivity, he is still historically Tottenham’s most potent attacking player.

Total Goals – Over 3 @ 1.49

It is not often a drab affair between these two, and with the current form of both clubs taken into consideration, we fancy some goals at the Etihad.
